I'm planning ahead as usual. I still need to build my study before I can begin after moving houses.

But anyway, how do I go about painting a black legion? Other than painting it basic black and add gold trimmings, is there anything else to it?

I need to find some source material, but I'm thinking of a bulk black legion (not sure what troops in it yet) backed up behind it with a Steel Legion (mainly titans and seige weapons) with Khorne and Slannesh on one side and Nurgle and Tzeentch on the other side.

Black Legion painting from the G/W US Web site for 40K.  But should work for Epic !
  PAINTS USED:

Chaos Black

Chainmail

Shining Gold

Blood Red

Red Gore
1. Prime the model with Chaos Black Spray Primer. Then, carefully apply Chainmail to the Boltgun and banding on the model's arms, leg's, and helmet.? 2. To give the model an ornate look with ease, apply Shining Gold to the banding on the shoulder pads, the arrow on the helmet, and also the Boltgun.?        3. All that's left to paint is the topknot and the hemet's eyes. Use Red Gore on them and highlight these areas with a bit of Blood Red.

I based all of my figures with Chaos Black Primer.

Then dry brushed them with a mixture of Brazen Brass, Tin Bitz and Boltgun Metal.

Bronze was used for the weapons

Any horns, etc. were painted skull white.

Bases painted Dark Angel green and then flocked in grass (this is to match our playing cloth).

Flags from unused figures were added to Marines to make Icon Bearers.

Champions & Warlords where painted using brighter colours to make the stand out.

Basically did the same for all vehicles & titans, picked up some 40k chaos transfers of eBay and added some chaos symbols to some figures.

My own BL as shown in the Online store was painted using an undercoat of Chaos Black. Then add consecutive layers of chaos black, first mixed with regal blue and then adding some white to the mix. If the result get too blue/grayish you could wash it with thinned down chaos black again.

An alternative method might be to use black basecoat, then a heavy drybrush of Shadow Grey followed by a wash of chaos black again (Water/paint ratio depending on how black you want it to be again.

The final solution is to use a white undercoat and use a black ink. Add a bit of black paint to the ink to make it look less shiny and wash it all over the model. It's a bit trikier, but if the white spray undercpoat has been evenly applied it should look alright. It will however require varnish afterwards to stop the ink from wearing off over time.

I'd say that is a pretty definative answer :D.
