I'm going to have a go at sculpting a Macharius tank for Epic. I'm starting out with a Basic Block of Sculpey? and working from there. You may recognise this pic from an earler thread:

Next I got a pencil and marked my Basic Block of Sculpey? with the shapes I wanted to carve out. I've not tried modelling this way before, so cross everything you've got and wish me luck...
Regards,
Reaver

Okay, I've spent the last couple of hours with a Dremel and some sandpaper, and here's a pic of what it looks like so far.
I'm pretty pleased, to be honest. I think this will be a good base to sculpt on to.

Regards,
Reaver

looking good so far.  I admire the straighness of your edges, as I find working with anything which isn't already straight edged (i.e. not Green Stuff!) makes getting clean edges nigh impossible...

Good luck with this, I'll keep watching! :)

Good grief - great work Reaver. Now I'm really curious to see how you go about doing caterpillar tracks.

What are the properties of sculpey like? plaster-ish? plastic-like?

Once it's baked, it's quite plaster-ish, and can be a bit crumbly when you carve it. It sands quite nicely though.

The big question is how well other things will stick to it. I know plasti-card will superglue to it, but I'm not sure if GreenStuff, Milliput, or even unbaked Sculpey will stick to it. If they don't, then this project is over!
Fingers crossed....
Regards,
Reaver

Incredibly slow progress, I'm afraid... I can feel the words 'long-term project' heading inexorably toward this thread.

I couldn't get Sculpey to stick to the sanded / carved block, and have been forced to use Green Stuff instead, which I despise!
I've mixed it 50/50 with Milliput to get rid of some of the 'chewing gum' feel of GS.

Anyway, all I've managed so far is one track / side panel.
Here it is:
