Decided to paint these up the other night seeing as how they've been waiting for paint since Christmas when my wife ordered just about one of everything from JR Miniatures 6mm sci-fi line.  That and it gave me an excuse to try out my new light set up.

Medium Forward Defense Modules

Small Forward Defense Modules

Overall I'm disappointed with these castings and several of the other ones received.  The material is a hard plaster, guessing dental of some sort.  The pieces themselves are lop-sided and have several bubbles throughout the pieces.  My recommendation if you decide to order from them is stick with the resin pieces as the casting is a much better quality...at least on the resin pieces I received.  In the end though, they're workable terrain pieces.

Anyway, these were painted with Apple Barrel craft paints.  Country Tan for base, Brown Oxide for dark lining, and highlighted the edges with a 2:1 mix of Dolphin Gray:Country Tan though the highlighting doesn't seem to show well in the pics (first shots with the new light tent and lights).

Yes, JR's casting are not always as detailed as I like. But I've got some, and added detail to some of them. But those you have there Sarge, look like Ork construction !  Your Orks (if you have any?!?) have new homes !  Otherwise those would make good lo-tech alien structures ! :alien:

I'm kind of surprised by the quality. I have a bunch of stuff from JR Minis and they all came out fine.

In any case, nice paintjob.

Out of the 50 or so items my wife bought me for Christmas, the four resin pieces are fine.  Almost every plaster one though is misshapen in some way.  Only a handful are cast well.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm kind of surprised you didn't return them.

I have the same experience with the lopsided casts.  I bought a bunch from a clearance "grab bag" sort of deal, so no returns.

A sander with coarse grit should sand down the angled bases quickly.  That doesn't help the detail, but they should stand up straight.

She bought them online and I didn't feel like it was worth the hassle to return them.  I'll have to try the sanding, to be honest when I saw all the bubbles I decided I wasn't going to do much by way of prep work on them.

Hello Sergeant Crunch. I have to apologize for the condition of the castings you received from us here at Jr Miniatures. We have been improving our design work and the process of manufacturing quality products is an ongoing operation. My first attempt at the 1/300 sci-fi structures leaves a lot to be desired. Sergeant, would you please send me some information on what your wife bought you for Christmas so I could issue a product credit? Thanks!

I might be in the minority, but I really like your Sci-Fi structures. I've already bought some and I plan on buying some of the discontinued ones.

I Have some too, and some were a bit off. But generally, most of the stuff I got is good ...  The Egyptian pieces were pretty good. Some of the Sci-fi was off a bit, but my Orkses have not complained ! :alien:
