Okay, I'm preparing to start on my Capitol Imperialis. But before I do, I've got to make a crucial decision - should the ramps open or not?

Sounds simple, I know, but will make a huge difference to how I go about sculpting it.

So, please help me decide: Should the ramps open, or is a fixed model better? Certainly fixed ramps would be faster and cheaper to produce, but should a centrepiece model like this have the extra detail of opening ramps? Or is that too toy-like?

I just can't decide, and I can't start until I have; so please Help me!

Reaver

I think your giant battle crawler should have opening ramps.

Personly I wouldnt bother. So long as the closed ramps oviously look like ramps.

OPEN!
With lots of interior detail and place to put a Leman Russ or three. Or troop bases.

Open :) That is a separate ramp which you can have open or closed.

I'm guessing it would make your job easier to have the ramps closed. Unless you're going to have interior details, you might as well leave the ramps closed.

It would certainly be a lot easier to have them closed; and I guess some interior detail would be needed as well.

I'm still on the fence with this. I'll draw up plans for both ways and work from there.

Thanks for the comments so far - if anyone else has an opinion, please add it!

It would be really cool if your CI would look like the concept scetches for the new one SG had planned :)
Like a gothic church on tracks with a big gun :D

That's the idea - it was seeing the Mark Bedford sketches that Otter posted which set my sculpting fingers twitching...

I hope your Assault Cathedral does not look TOO much like the concepts. Just for safety reasons.  :;):

Just as a bit of shameless pluggery, here's a concept sketch for a revised CI I made a couple of years ago. Never got around to actually making it (Although I do have the basic shape and tracks converted up somewhere :p

Feel free to nick anything if you find it usable. I'll look forward to seeing what you come up with

Thanks for the pic, WMN, I reckon there might be an idea or two for me to plunder there... :D

Here's a (badly photographed) pic of the basic design I'm using. It's very close to the GW concept sketches, basically because I want to do a really good job, and then send a cast to Jervis, along with a letter explaining what a dedicated  Epic bunch we are here at TacComms. It's a desparate attempt to try and get some interest from JJ or SG generally.

Anyway, I've decided not to do the ramps opening - because even without them, it'll be a 9 piece kit!

I've got the Dreadclaw in the mould now, so hopefully the next day or two should see this project under way.

i have just looked at the inquisition task force army list that is in the rule section of these boards in it is described a mobile fortress or drop fortress which i presume is a capitol imp. iwould consider trying to make one with out tracks or maby a alternate undercarrige (just a thought 2 models out of one cast) i hope that makes sence its been a late one?

Okay, I've made a start on this, but it will definitely be a long project - there's a lot involved!

I'm working on the basic shape now, but I have finished most of the front panel. (pic below) I did a relief sculpt of Sebastian Thor, and the sun type thing he's holding will be where the Behemoth cannon barrel goes.

I don't know how much more I'll get done this week, as I have to do some real work
