Dude that's rad! 3D printed base and the top is?

DRM Thunderstrike.
Due to a slight miscalculation in scale I needed to add larger feet (the bases from some hapless Orks who wandered too close).
The rest of the base was 20 mins work in Sketchup. I'll probably add a bit more plasticard detail and call it done.

You can't fool me! I'm almost positive that there is a missing step in there.

1. Sketchup design
2. ________________
3. Get amazing base to glue stuff on.

I have been interested in doing 3D work, but every time I look into it, it seems like it all costs thousands of dollars. I know that Sketchup is free (I think), but this is the first that I've heard of it being used for small scale stuff. Any hints and tips would be well received!

Shapeways... :)
From memory, 8 bases was around $17 in FUD.
Sketchup is free, and not to difficult for something as simple as this. Some people on these forums do amazing things - way beyond my ability.
I can dig out the sketchup files and STL files if you are interested in using them as a starting point.

Thank you for the information! I went and downloaded SketchUp and I am now drawing shapes and pushing and pulling them about. It is a lot of fun! I have a lot of experience working in Adobe Illustrator, and it is very similar to that where you make something and replicate it throughout the work. The cruciform base is a good example: make one leg and then duplicate three times.

The angular base is a good starter model, I think. I just wish that there was a nice step-by-step tutorial specifically for miniature makers. Maybe there is, but I just haven't found it yet.

Looking at the SketchUp files would be greatly appreciated. I'll bet that I'd learn a lot by checking them out.

Thank you for the offer!

- Jeff

I have not been idle... I promise! Here is my first platoon of infantry, all based up. Squat Warriors, to the front!

Remember that one time centuries ago when the enemy looked at us funny at that one spaceport? Avenge our forefathers... advance on those pointy-eared gits and let them have it!

More photos to come!

In Epic Squats brown beards are a dominant trait. Everyone knows that.

(I tried a stand with different color beards and it didn't look very good. The dark beards clashed with the visor shield and the blond beards looked odd with the yellow disk thingy on their chests. The mismatch visually detracted from the stand. There are a few Squats in my forces with different color beards... just not in the Warriors.)

I have it on good authority that any Squat trying to dye his beard is Warp-tainted.

Everyone knows that black beards indicate Chaos Squattage. There are only two proper colors for Squat beards: brown or gray.

Careyradas -

That's exactly what I was trying for. I wanted a classic look to them with a more recent basing style. I played the game when it first came out so the classic colors are imprinted in my mind: Genestealers are purple and blue. Squats are red/yellow/green. I don't know what a Necron is.

I think that I hit the mark. The red/yellow/green outfit just screams "Squats" to me. That's why I went for it.

I have one other unit that is finished and two more that require some basing. They will have the same retro feel to them as well. I think that my next model will be an airship. It will have a slightly muted retro palette. I think. We'll see what happens with it!

I've noticed your rank seems to be dropping as you post. Did someone high-up note your lack of beard-fu? ;)

Looking forward to the airship(s)!
