Sort of: where do you get the time to do all these things? Social Life doesn't suffer? :p

Though I can't speak for WMN I was asked a similar question recently.

Apart from using the TARDIS now and again I have found the following helps.

a) Don't watch TV, especially mindless TV, all the time. I now only watch about 5 hours a week (if that) sometimes more if I am watching a film.

b) Don't play the games console or video game just "one more time". Bubble Bobble takes a good hour now... and "one more game" means one more hour!

c) Keep things tidy, my best thing is my GW painting table, which I use, in and out of the cupboard, so setting up is a few minutes, packing up less than ten.

d) Don't mess, focus on what you are going to do and get it done. I can spend ages fiddling with bits and pieces and not actually get any modeling or painting done.

e) Little and often, rather than spend hours I may paint for an hour and then do something else.

f) Right tools and paint, having good brushes makes life easier and painting quicker. Having lots of different paints, avoids the need for constant mixing when doing highlights and so on.

g) Motivation, decided what you want to do and get it done.

Some people say do a single model, I actually have a few models on the go, but not large amounts and not lots. So I paint three Skorchaz, four 40K Grots, a single Rhino and so on... These then actually get finished.

As for a social life, well I spend a lot of quallity time with my family and go out quite often.

Hi!

Well stated advice. especially a and b. I found that eliminating those 2 I have tons of time for other things.

I must say.... I only get painting done while watching TV, and I get an aweful lot of it done. I need something else or I get bored while painting.

I really like having stuff like Discovery Channel or similar running in the background. Although you miss the visual side I guess the slightly meditative state you're in, while concentrated on painting, make you remember the stuff from the TV better. A nice way to get smarter AND get some work done. :D

Hi!

I have done this too. I put on some documentary I like and listen to it as I deal with hobby related things.

WMN you make Markconz cry. How do you manage to accomplish so much!?!?! The seven habits of highly effective wargame figure painters by WMN - what are they?

Speaking for myself. TV on in background can definitely help with the painting... sometimes it is a distraction but not usually! I get bored wathicng TV or even  movies unless I'm doing something at the same time like painting so it works out well.

The biggest time sink in my life is probably this forum :(  I don't mean that in a bad way but there it is... I read about WMN's painting instead of doing my own!!

I'm in the same boat, I find it really helps me get on with painting if I have something on in the background.  For some reason, I prefer the tv to music.  I like putting on a good sit-com - Simpsons, Father Ted, Frasier - or a DVD commentary.  I think having a tv, which has a moving image, not just sound, is a bit like having some 'company' while I'm model making/painting.  I agree with what you say about it being 'meditative'.  Music can be a bit repetitive.  And, as I discovered last week, listening to something like Nirvana whilst struggling with Green Stuff can do little to help you temperament...

Oh, and looking forward to seeing 'Project X', WMN!  :blues:

I was looking through my bitz box yesterday when I came across these:

I think there were some of the very first Epic minis I ever painted.. I think in 1993 or 1994. The Marines on the left were from my very first tactical formation which was the first troops I ever painted. The Devastators on the right were painted some time later. I remember painting these were a real pain as everything had to be undercoated white by hand. It took forever and the result wasn't even very good. To make matters worse the brushes I used weren'tvery good either Obviously it was also a bad idea to attempt to paint shoulder trims on those early models. In a year or so I only ever finished a single tactical company and a couple of Orks and Eldar from the Space Marine Boxed set.
Aaah, the memories... :D

I also prefer not to paint in silence. I don't have a TV near my workbench where I do my painting, but I do like to listen to music. Usually a turn on a radio. Unfortunately, since my workbench is in the basement of my house, the music sometimes gets drowned out by either the furnace or the pump for the well.

My bane since ~November has been Civ4.
:p

I used to leave enough stuff set up and ready to go that I could sit down and paint for 15 minutes whenever the opportunity arose.  With 1 child, I could get away with it because we outnumbered him.  With 2, there is a much greater chance that the youngest will get into something before one of us catches her.  It's just not possible any more.  I have to have larger blocks of time to factor in setup and tear-down.

Hi!

I hear ya Neal.

I got the game since December and have been purposefully avoiding to play it, since the first times I did, DAYS melted away in playing it.

Continuing work on the ELdar titans. The Revenants are closest to being finished: Just need to shade and highlight the red, add some black + detail with jewels and stuff.

Cheers! :)
