These things are a breeze to paint.

First Salamander scout squadron done, second just needs detail work.

Aww. Give yourself some credit. These look ace :D Some kind of unit designations (you could use decals) would make a nice finishing touch I think.

I'm not sure how to do this in a fashion that allows the modularity I want. I will continue to consider the problem.

Black primer. Fenris Grey undercoat followed by a Space Wolves Grey drybrush. Don't be skimpy on the drybrush or the later wash will drown it out. The light grey is Astronomicon Grey with a Skull White fine-edge highlight. Metals are all Chainmail, painted on the vents, overbrushed on the tracks. Give the thing a liberal wash of Badab Black and let it dry. Weather the tracks to taste with a drybrush of Vermin Brown. Headlights are Bad Moon Yellow, and the taillights are red gore.

I've completed examples of 5 of the 8 Russ variants, and am happy with 4 of them.

Image
Left to right: Vanquisher, Leman Russ, Conquerer, Exterminator, Demolisher.

The Demolisher is the only one I have misgivings about. I can't reasonably drill out the turret to 3/32", the diameter of the outer tube, as that is the height of the turret itself, or near enough. So I used a 1/16" tube to connect. I may greenstuff or plasticard a mantlet to hide the rod. Not sure; I'll be more willing to experimant when my second round comes in. I will say the shadow gives the cannon a flared appearane not seen IRL.

What did you use to cut the tubing?

Plain old exacto. Make sure you have a blade specifically for this, because it destroys the blade. Measure out the length, and roll the tubing with the knife. It will create a good score, and eventually you can just snap it.

i cut all my tubing (which admittedly is plasticard, i cut brass rod with clippers and sand to length) with a pipecutter. its a fantastic gadget, and keeps the cuts very straight.

it looks like this Image
and should cost 10-20 bucks for a small sized one (which is all folks like us need) though you may need to find a specialist one for even smaller sizes, lord knows how much they'd cost (i personally use my one size, and simply use it to score smaller rods, which i then cut with a craft knife)
