Hi!

An epic scale version of that would be most welcome.

I even like the color. ;)

NCO is getting pretty close, and he has a pretty awesome design in the works. This picture makes it real and makes me want one!

Ive been working on the tail. This was a bit of an unknown as its not shown in the photo so I had to make something that made sense to me and tied in with other space marine vehicles. After looking around I went for a tail that looks similar to the "flying potato" aka stormtalon . I then added some supports to link it more to the rest of the body width. Thinking about the ramp at the back and the heat the engines would be at (even after being deactivated once they reached the atmosphere) I thought having the tail supports come down to act as slight guards would be sensible and would also look quite interesting.

Pretty excited about today. GF is out, no work to do, which means a whole day to geek and see how far I can get on the stormbird.

Ive already managed to get one side of the cockpit structure done. Pretty happy with it:

OK, my eyes hurt at the moment (too much looking at a small screen) but let me give you a quick catchup of what Ive done today (kind of got caught up in it and didnt take pics all along the way)

1. Scaled up to true scale
2. Ran through the problems this created
3. Resized the guns so they are still correct (they now look much more realistic in terms of size as this isnt a gunship
4. Remade the "chin" mount"
5. Made the AA mount thinner (this was much more of a nightmare than I had envisaged when I started)
6. Made the underwing missiles (its meant to have 8 hunterkillers total)

Well thats were I am now. Taking a break and then I'll get some pics.

I havent put the "wings" on yet and Im starting to think it doesnt need them. There is no sensible place for them and I cant really see them serving a purpose in the place they are on the original drawing. Your opinions on this would be really helpful as I dont really know what to do.

Looking good. I still think the cockpit looks a bit out of scale, though. I think that a Vconfigured set of tailwings would look sharp.

I agree it does nitpick but that seems the size of it on the picture. And I dont want to be changing things around too much. I could maybe flatten it down a bit?

Ive had it mentioned that maybe I should do tail fins like on the storm raven where I am taking the design for that part from. What do you guys think:

Yeah that's going to visually tie them together

This is looking great but i think you still need to do something with the cockpit to give a better idea of scale. More window framework like those german WWII bombers or something may help with this.

I could add more to the cockpit but then it starts to look quite noticeably different to the picture. And where would you add the lines? Id really like to see a quick sketch of what people would do?

I was thinking of just painting on some very fine panel lines on the glass as I didnt think it would be part of the main "framework" but smaller extra supports. Not sure though. Its been mentioned before by nitpick, the cockpit does make the scale harder to appreciate.

:nopics Sorry no sketch, only letters. :whistle I would add panel lines as suggested. It now looks like an Apache cockpit. Nice, but out of scale. I would also add some sections where there is no see though glass, thus reducing the glass surface. Further, i would flatten the top of the cockpit down, removing the current humpback shape and replacing it with a classic ww2 German greenhouse look that sticks up from the hull, but not as much and hugs its general shape better. Adding fine Grimdark wires, vents and hatches of a minute scale will also help out a lot.

Lastly, I think the tail is a good start, but I find it way too small. You need two huge fins V-wings/fins that are also attached directly to the aircraft, not to a vertical tail. That looks off on your much more exciting curvy design.

I hope this d not sound like I am overly critical. I do think you are on to something truly wonderful here. But sense of scale is very important.

Edit: oh, and why bother about looking exactly like the picture? It does not work anyway and I am sure you have changed a few bits already. I think the changes suggested, or others to the same effect, will improve a clearly underdeveloped concept found in that picture.,it will still look similar to it, but it will have your distinct (nicer) design elements added. That is creativity at its best in my book. Keep up the very good work!
