Hi

I love these new Battlewagons- do you have any close ups and/or can you let me know what colours you used?

As I mentioned I am trying to finish off some half-painted Evil Sunz- I was thinking of mechrite red over a black undercoat and then blood red.

Do you use the old Speedsta with Bubble Chukka as a Zzap gun oddboyz? I was thinking of using them as Gunwagons but that might be a good way of getting more Zzap guns.

Thanks

James

Thanks L4! Sorry I haven't been around to reply for a while: yeah, I really like my red orks at the moment: I think they work pretty well. A few people have asked my recipe for red and it's dead easyL

Black undercoat, red gore basecoat, blood red "second" basecoat leaving the red gore in the areas that require shade, highlights, edges, rivets etc in blazing orange, red ink. Done! Nice and shiny!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other news I'm VERY glad to announce that I've started my next epic project and it's already rolliing forwards quite well: I've got all the models I need, all the flock, bases, paints etc and it has begun!

What is it?

I@m building a MASSIVE Imperial Guard collection that will fulfill almost every guard list out there: siege, mech, titan legions, air ca, tanks armies, cadians etc: it's one collection of miniatures that fulfills many roles :-)

Additionally there are two very special things about this army:
1) it's going to contain almost NO GW mini's, instead it's being fuelled by my own conversions, proxies from other 6mm manufacturers and taccomms community efforts
2) I'm using lot's of techniques from the Forgeworld style of painting in order to create a real down and dirty weathered army effect: a real departure from my usual style of painting!

So: what have I got to show you good folks so far? After much experimenting with techniques here are three FW (not GW!) salamanders. THese will be used as scout tanks, seigfrieds and chimera depending on list.

I'm really happy with how they came out :-). Which base edging colour do people prefer? I'm definitely leaning towards the graveyard earth.

And here's some sneak peaks of what else is going on:

The GW infantry are going to fill in for my engineers/stormtroopers/sappers etc until Exodus wars release their next wave of royal empire (who form my main blcoks of troops. I can't afford frenchmen!

So: we're back on track! As always I would really appreciate constructive criticism and suggestions but at the moment I'm pretty happy with how things are progressing: this is probably going to be my LAST epic army as I've got allmost every other one painted up (i'm going to start a website to document them all next year and to advocate for more Epic Armageddon love out there!) so my intention is to really get this one top notch :-)

Hope you all enjoy!
Yrs,

I'm a bit mixed in my thoughts here. On one hand I think the weathering works fairly well to give things a weathered look, but on the other it doesn't really give me a 6mm weathered feel. I think what's happening here is that the weathering is being done last and you are killing your shadows and highlights combined with the bright metal weathering it's giving off the feeling of an old metal model that's seen some rough treatment.

I think you need to go back in in black line the shadows after you do the weathering to help add depth again and perhaps see about a bit darker gray for the primary color. The main areas I'm looking at are the edges of the tracks to break them from the hull and give the appearance of a movable object rather than treads that are cast in place. I'm also looking at areas where your orange rust meets a recess for black lining to bring back depth. It would also help to have the solid gray broken up a bit with other colors. Either regimental stripes, numbers, or other markings would help.

I do really like your dirt though, is it PVA mixed with real dirt for that effect?

What dirt effect is it you like Vaish? THe base or the brown weathering on the vehicles? I'll happily reveal all the secrets!

I need to get a better picture but I see what you mean. You're correct that the weathering is being done last, before that they've had a flat grey undercoat, a drybrush of lighter grey, followed by a liberal wash of charadon granite mixed with acrylic thinners and washing up liquid. Perhaps do the drybrush after?

I see what you mean about the shadowns, I'll definitely get some black wash around those tracks and see what happens :-)

Have been thinking about regimental stripes yes: the old classic white red white would work fine I'm thinking...

MoK: particularly the look of the dirt on the base of the Malcador you've zoomed in on.

I think if you go back in after weathering and work on the contrast a bit you'll be golden with these.

Graveyard earth works best for me mate. I've started using it on the FoW base edging and it brings them up nicely...

Cheers

Aye, I'm leaning towards graveyard too.

Vaaish: I'm painting all day today at the wargames store and will have picture up later: mud effect on the bases is soemthing called "coarse pumice" and is a resin mixture with what I'd describe as simply grit in it...again, I'll include a picture of it in the progress report tonight when I'm done gaming:-)!

Afternoon all!

Been sticking LOTS of little men together recently and now trying to get all of the basing material on before grey undercoating...so little/no paint progress but my dudesmen need bases!

Vaaish: this is what I've been using on the bases:
Image
I see it in model shops here and there but picked mine up from Cut and Thrust wargames, Bristol, UK. It's a textured resin mixture...

As people will have noticed I'm using FoW bases. I really like the extra room they give for infantry and that bevelled edge is quite nice too (jeez...sometimes I think I need to get a life!). Anyway, for epic figures just plonking a bloke down won't quite do as they stick up on their 'discs' so I've had to drill hundreds of 6mm diameter holes in the bases!
Image
DON'T DO THIS INDIVIDUALLY! The best bet is a pillar drill and a good vice clamp to hold multiple bases in at once. But run it on a VERY LOW SPEED! High speed drilling melts these bases and your holes get all messy...

And then you can take your nice new exodus wars infantry and stick them on!
Image

Other options might include some elite french troopers that I recently got sent...
Image

I'm working on my first 3k of this guard army to field as Baran Siegers at the UK GT at the end of this month so I'll be getting that done and dusted first :-)

After that it's a whole gamut of other nice guard shaped bits to do!

Hi- we do reds pretty similarly, except I like to start with mix of Mechrite Red and Blood Red rather than Red Gore (I find the touch of Mechrite Red helps going over black undercoat better). It did help to see your those and was definitely an inspiration and help to get started. Thanks.

Like the start of the Imperial Guard. Nicely muted and very realistic. I like the way that you have used the FoW bases but I don't think I would have the patience to do all the drilling of holes for each figure/ Looking forward to seeing this progress.

Cheers

James

I like your ideas her MOK, I may pinch a couple when completing B'mans Krieg Army over the summer here. Is that paste hard to find? I will be looking for a similar product down under.

Cheers

you've had a similar idea to myself, I think guard are the best army to do without GW products, there is so much great stuff out there....

I want to do a steel legion mechanised infantry force with lots of artillery, but also a krieg force with gorgons, macharius tanks and tons of infantry, I also like the cadians with their stormlords and kasrkins..... I'll be taking plenty of inspiration from this thread :)
