Just to go way back in time on your blog. This colour (your crimson fists) is basically how my Ultramarines have come out (in fact they may even be lighter). got any tips on how to make them more ultramarinish?

There was never any inking actually! It's just hthe fact that my camera skills improved in getting it to show what things atually looked like!
By more Ultramarinish what do you mean? Lighter, darker? I'd say highlighitng with a mix of your base blue colour mixed with yellow; it will give a different feel to just highlighting with a lighter blue which is what i did.

Sorry, missed this post.

Looks really nice. the colors are good and there's definitely enough light. I take it this is shot using regular daylight?

One suggestion to help reduce the harsh shadows is to soften up the light a bit. This could be done using baking paper/wax paper (not sure what it is called in the UK) to work as a diffuser. Using artificial light you'd usually have more than one lightsource in order to counter this problem, but with natural light it is a bit different. One method is to use a reflector on the opposite side of the miniature to reflect light back to the areas where the natural light doesn't hit (think those sun mirror thingines excessive sun-bathers use to catch as much sun as possible). You can use a simple piece of white cardboard, polystyrene or whatever for this. You could also experiment with an artifical lightsource in conjunction with the natural light, though there's a chance this may confuse the camera's color balance a bit. By doing this you would get more light on the right leg and the torso, and the red color of the head would be more visible.

Finally you can try experimenting with fill in flash. For this to work with miniatures you need to move the camera further away from the miniature. You lose a bit of the macroeffect, but colors can sometimes seem more vibrant and sharper defined, especially if natural lighting conditions are poor, and you don't feel like setting up a full rig with several light sources. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't as glossy areas and metal can get overexposed and paited shadows look weird since the natural shadow is removed. If you got a DSLR camera with a seperate and/or tiltable flash you get some interesting options for boncing the light usig reflectors to light up the areas of the model you feel is a bit underexposed.

It all depends a bit on the camera really so the best thing to do is simply to play around with various settings untill you get a result you're happy with.

Back on the bench again and preparing for 'Into the Breach' with a 3k ork army.  All the infantry are done as are a kult of speed (think they're back in this thread somewhere...), fighta bommerz and other such stuff but looking back at some of my old miniatures they really aren't up to scratch so I've set about improving the big bits of the army, war engines, stompa's and stuff in the hopes of getting a half decent painting score!
Last night i got one of the new stompa's done:

And i swear i'm going to hunt down the sculptor; man are those little indentations annoying!
A few days ago i also painted the 'small gunz' in the big gunz mob; an orky deathstrike is to follow:

Before two weeks time i'd very much like to get 2 more stompas, supa stompa, landa and two battleforts done.
I also NEED to paint up 4 flakwagons; just so as you all know what your in for.

Back on track with a dash to the finish line for the tournament this weekend!
Wasn't too happy with my Ork army but then i painted the unit of big gunz that you can see a few posts back and they caused me to go into a painting frenzy which included stripping almost all of the vehicles and war engines i've got and starting again! Still 3 super heavy vehicles to paint up by the weekend but progress is being made:

Zzap Gun for Gunz Mob/Soopagun for Blitz's

Blitz Brigade

Supa Stompa

I hereby promise a whole army shot by Friday Evening!

Excellent work MoK. I think the angle for the Supa Stomper is dead on for NetEpic Gold. I see you got a Zapp gun among your field artillery as well. Can I persuade you to snap a pic of that one too?

Could you send full resolution versions of those images to chris (at) mustangsalling.dk please ?

I've just read through the entirety of this thread, and MoK, you are quite the painting machine, arne't you?  :D

4 armies in less than a year is an enviable rate of work, well done  :)  You clearly don't let such trifling distractions as 40k armies, running campaigns, BFG fleets, and small children :p come between you and getting your Epic armies done!

I'd already seen your armies over at BoLS Lounge, but I'd not noticed the L&tD Cultist transports, they're especially cool, they certainly put the ones I started work on 3 years ago (!) to shame (mine were a cross between Rhino and the Ork Battlewagons you use, but not nearly as good...)
