Another thing that I like about separate treads is that different armor styles, such as spaced or reinforced, could be combined with the hulls. Is that merely interesting, or something really exciting that makes you shout at the computer?

Edit - or perhaps that's something better served by adding plate things? Like one would add Crusader style frag launcher panels.

1) Make sure the Weapons are in front of the side troop doors. 2) Don't make a "Doppelganger" of existing weapons systems. 3) Some variation is nice.

I like the weapons in front of the side doors not very practical, sure, but cooler looking IMO.

So options would be great on that front

Silly Legion-4, if specialist games makes a chaos land raider, they'll make it exactly like the 40K version. You so crazy.

For those of you who have assembled E40K Chaos Land Raiders (CAL0001, Onyx, I'm looking at you), did you find the large rectangular mating panels to be sufficient to keep things lined up, or would you have preferred a different sort of plug arrangement?

Cal001 assambled all his Chaos Land Raiders before they got to me.
He'll have a much better idea than me about that.

I haven't got any E40K Raiders. All mine are just modified Mk I plastics.

I found GW's arrangement with their Chaos Landraiders to be sufficient for alignment purposes.

Ref putting them together, the plates rarely match up and you are forever greenstuffing the gaps created. Something that is more precise would be much better than the last effort by GW. I would go as far as saying a single hull piece including track sections, and only have the weapons as separate items. This reduces the friction points when building said item. Likewise one should learn from the small recess made in the Loyalist LR, a better method of attaching the weapon system should be employed.
