Of course, it struck me whilst I was writing, he would have been familar with m60's and similar, not todays (or even back then european) MBTs with their focus on massive survivability vis a vie other nations designs (saying that even Russian style tanks are going for more protection these days, largely int he context of anti insurgency supremecy operations). Especially his open car design which gives a better fighting platform but higher casualties (fine for merc's, not acceptable to todays US military so witness the ever more armoured coin vehicles being produced in the US).
