I think it's mandatory that you have projects you don't have time to work on.  If it weren't a mad, out of control obsession, I don't think many of us would even be involved w/ gaming.

I don't go into as much detail as Neal or CS, but I do have a detailed list of what units I want to go into the armies I'll be working on for the next 2 years.  I have a general idea of composition for future armys as well.  I begin planning and acquiring well before I can actually start work on a specific army.  Of course there's also the obligatory inventory to help direct purchases.

I pretty much try to focus on 1 army at a time.  When it's where I want it to be, I'll move on to the next.

Meh... I never have time for gaming but still have a million unfinished projects sitting around. When people think I'm being very productive I am actually only finishing a load of projects that has been taking up space for  way too long :D
It certainly doesn't halp to see all the great ideas other people have: So many ideas to nick, so little time :p :D :;):

I have put together an Access database which holds details of the games that I 'collect', organised into four categories of priorities, with a related table of the forces for each game, organised into main and support forces!

Wow.  :O  I need one of those googly-eyed smileys.

I suddenly feel much better about my anal-retentive self.  :p

If anyone wants a copy of the spreadsheet, just pm or email me.

I'd say every wargamer has these problems - so don't worry you're not alone  :;):  You know, there is a reason we collect so many lead -

I think at the speed I paint combined with the amount of unpainted lead I have I'm now effectively immortal.

In my case it's no so much not having a plan for what I want to get done as lacking the motivation since I rarely seem to manage to either find the time to paint or the opponents once I've painted.

I seem to be an "Epic" procrastinator more than anything else.  :(

Wow. I thought that I was the only wargame accountant! It is good to know that I am in good company. However, I do trump that... I have put together an Access database which holds details of the games that I 'collect', organised into four categories of priorities, with a related table of the forces for each game, organised into main and support forces!

A database?

Wow C/S! That sir is *hardcore*.

I'm sad to say all I use is a spreadsheet and that's mostly just to keep track of "replacement value" for household insurance purposes...

And it's a bit depressing to realize your books and games have a combined value of approximately everything else you own.

I spent most of last year painting bits....bit here, bit there...but no real plan.   So this year, my goal is to pick a single army, paint up enough to field a coherent 4000 point army, fight a battle with it, then move on.  So far I've been successful with Iron Warriors, Slann and now Hordes of Evil (except the game part on the later).  Next target....PDF I think.

Yes, there is never enough time. And new armies and projects come out of nowhere even older are still finished... (uh, orange marines...) :D
And I'm that kind of person who makes lists, I make lists of armies to have, what each army contains and what really needs painting in some period of time etc.

I made quick calculation and if I paint with current speed, it takes around 19 years to complete all I have, of course providing I never bought more.. Is that going to happen, NO! :D

I have a list of things to achieve.  Basically these are priority lists for what expanding existing armies, by way of what is most useful in terms of composition and tabletop use. For the first time, this year I decided to start a painting blog http://www.tacticalwargames.net/cgi-bin....23;st=0 to provide a bit of focus and feedback/ideas. Currently I am very slowly putting finishing touches to two reavers.

I keep about a dozen paints and brushes that are currently being used on the corner of my desk and can quickly grab a  current project and do another coat or two in 30 minutes. Makes a good break from heavy grad work :)

Good Golly, you are an organised lot, I've no idea what I have, no idea what I still have to paint and probably don't really have a playable army, the only thing I have on paper are scribbled notes as to company and comander names and parts of backstory
I paint in a similar style to NealHunt though, a handful of stuff on the corner of the kitchen table (much to my wifes chagrin) 'til it's more or less done, at the moment some Eldar aircraft, some LOTR figs and a vampire that I'm painting for a friend. Now if I had anybody about with which to game maybe I could focus myself.

hehe... database.... that's nothing.

A few years back when work was quiet, I taught myself visual basic.

So I wrote a little inventory tool sitting on top of Access Database.

The database holds reference to articles and pictures in the White Dwarf.

So using the VB interface I can select from the main catergory say 40K and then select Blood Angels and it'll list me everything I added, the mag number and page and any other details I added.

It also holds my stock of epic, although I never update it.

The GUI's better than what you can do with Access.  And its plain and simple to use.

I just wish I kept the database updated with each WD I got.

Yes... that is nasty. Luckily I have the database at work.

But if i remember correctly, wasn't the vinidcator conversion guide a Warhammer 40K one?? And that is VERY old if I remember which one... one of the WD's I've torn apart and kept only the pictures.

Sometimes I got lazy (especially with stuff I didn't have much interest). But...

for Epic IG tank pictures see
WD181 pg 412
WD 207 pg 28
WD 216 Pg 10 ice scenary style

I had to enter all the data in, so you can imagine how bored this could get. The database is as good as the person sitting behind entering it.
