I think he just has "the touch".

I've done alot of trading with O-man through bartertown and he was kind enough to gave me all his tips for resin casting.

My stuff still comes out like junk a fair amount of the time.  Of course, that could just be me, hmmmm........ :confuse:

To get started, I recommend getting the starting kit from MicroMark.

If that floats your boat, use Smooth-On ?for additional resin and silicon purchases. My personal favorites are Mold Max 310 rubber and Smooth-Cast 305 plastic.

The 310 rubber is a 10:1 mixture, so you'll need a digital scale. It's harder to work with than the blue 1:1 rubber from the start kit, but it is much more durable.

More tips as I dredge them from memory. Later I'll post a picture of the things I use to keep my Titan population under control. Once you get a breeding size group of Imperators together, they really 'get busy'.

Avoid Alumilite's resin. It sets up too fast, and is thick, which fails to flow into detail.

The resin starter kit has a really neat little pamphlet and flyer that describe two different methods of making a two-part mold. One method is the suspend-in-the-middle-of-the-box. The other method is to use Kleen Klay to form the first half of the mold. Always use the Klay method; the suspend method always generates air bubbles in the first part of the mold on the underside of the pattern. I just wasted 4 or 5 ounces of rubber re-learning that yesterday.

Get latex gloves (like the nurse wears). Use them, or you'll be either washing your hands raw or have slick resinated finger tips.

Get a painting tarp. This facet of the hobby gets super messy.

Local hobby shops will have nifty little tiny clear mixing cups. Be on the lookout for them.

You will usually have resin left over in your mixing cup. Tilt the cup; when the resin dries, it will be easy to remove from the cup, and the cup can be re-used.

Visit hirstarts.com for more mold making advice. Advise?

The lid for the Micromark RTV is also the same size as the lid for the rubber-to-rubber mold release. Don't mix them up. I did, and had to spend another $10 on a bottle of mold release.

Speaking of mold release ALWAYS spray your pattern before pouring silicon. There's some more wasted time and silicon for me.

Cut channels in the mold to let air escape during resin-cast. Never underestimate the desire of air to stay in the mold. I use the squish-n-spin method of trying to get air out during this process.

Start small, like Leman Russ sized. My first experiments were with a Forge World epic bunker, and that used half of my silicon. Then I forgot to spray it with mold release during a resin casting, and the mold tore to shreds when I extracted the cast.

For one-sided molds, use a small wire or toothpick to poke at the tiny areas of the mold during resin-casting. This helps push out the air bubbles.
I learned another tip: If an item is more than 50% deep than wide, you will need a two sided mold for reliable casting. Otherwise, the mold will degrade quickly and tear.

Example of bad single sided mold: a piece of ruin from the E40K rectangular base sprue. Why? Because it is about twice as deep as it is wide, and thin.

Example of good single sided mold: the detailed side of the E40K ruins from the ruin sprue (if you file off the tiny bit of stuff on the non-detailed side so it lays flat).

Buy Legos. They save time for building mold boxes and are re-usable. No need for cutting and gluing foamcore boxes, no need to clay the occasional gaps in the boxes. Plus, Legos are fun to play with.

I also purchased some clay shapers to help make more precise clay bottoms, see http://prairiecraft.com/Merchan....e=FASCS

I didn't buy from those guys - used an art supply store, who had them for $6 per size 0 (ideal for miniatures). Why are these so good? Clay doesn't seem to readily stick to them, and when it does, a fast swipe on my newspaper table covering cleaned 'em in a second. They are probably also good with green stuff. I suggest the chisel or pointed type.
Don't use glass for mold bottoms. The silicon likes to stick to it. When you separate the mold from the glass, the glass will break, exploding shards into your living flesh!

Do what Bruce Hirst says - use plastic CD cases.

This was my project immediately prior to the Imperator.
The white blobs are control vehicles.

As promised, Titan population control...

Otterman your an inspiration!

I have have a almost complete Imperator Titan for over a year now laying in ruin, its simply missing the left leg and a tower spire.

Like a phenoix rising, i feel it will see combat soon enough!

Thanks! :)

You don't say? :) ----> SCC13 HQ It works pretty damn well actually.

I'm just about to try some Smooth-On myself. I agree with you about the viscosity of Alumilite - it's like molasses (sp?).

Okay, how in the world did you create a mold for this piece?  When you set up to make the mold (I am assuming you aren't using an injector) which way did you stand it?  Does my question make sense?  ???

Yes, your question makes sense. I don't use an injector, I use a lot of experience screwing up molds. Here's the secret to the shin pieces:

First, glue the front to the back, making a single piece.

Second, stopper up the hole in the bottom with some clay, but not too close to the botton. There needs to be some room for the foot to fit into (yes, that was a wasted mold learning that).

Third, when forming the clay part for the first half of the pour, arrange the clay such that a 'corner' will be the very topmost part of the mold.

Fourth, when both sides are poured, cut the pour channel into that corner. An air escape channel will have to be made on the other side of the leg indentation.

Fifth, don't pour the mold in one go. Pour a little into the shin cannon, and work the air bubble out with a toothpick. When that sets up, assemble the two halves of the mold and complete the pour.

And now, a picture...

Have you ever had problems with pouring half a mold, and leting it set, then pouring the second half. I tried that once and my finished piece sheared apart right at the horizon of the two parts. Have you ever had that happen?

The only time that happened to me was when using two different kinds of resin. All other attempts were successful.

I've had that happen when the molds were mobile.  :(

Great article, keep it up!

Do they happen to have an European distributor?

Or does someone know whether there is an equivalent service provider within EU?

Micromark says they'll ship to Europe, but you'll need to source your own mold release agent (It's an aerosol can, which doesn't ship by air, period).

Thanks for all of the kind words. Expect more things of interest next month. I'm taking a break for now; the Imperator re-forge project has occupied the majority of my free time for the last 5 months.

Remember, if you're needing a spare Imperator part, don't be shy, just zap me a PM or email.
