OK, here is my take based on the photo.

1) Too much of the same color, makes him look unfinished.

2) Too thick, kills some of the details.

3) Looks too much like an Ork at this point. Blob in Red.

What I would try, paint them in Silver or Boltgun. Use a red ink to do a couple of coats of wash. Let the red ink give the silver a red tint so to speak.

Just an idea.

I'd agree with that.  Also, a technique in 28mm painting is to highlight the edges of gold with a little silver.  It does look good.
Yeah, I know.  6mm minis. :p  But it might work if you placed it on one or two key areas.  The shoulder pads, perhaps.  I think it'd help emphasise the metal showing through the red tint.

And the crystals finish the vehicles off nicely. :)  Great stuff.
