I love the giddy 'old school' feeling I get when looking at these pictures.
Speaks of a joyous time when SM/Epic was the big 3rd title in GW's list and constantly supported. Ahh, those heady days.

Ah, this takes me back to my old painting days doing the Imperial Guard... about 8 months ago! ;D

Really nice work, and I feel your pain about the Rough Riders, the memory of painting the swines still haunts me! I remember the feeling of getting the first batch of 10 done and realising I still had another 20 to go, it was kind of like... :nooo

After that I was too lazy to bother giving the tanks a camo scheme, grey was all they were getting! You clearly have more patience than me! :)

Yeah I couldn't handle painting that many horses for my DKoK. I repurposed a truck load of 2nd edition bikers for them.

Hi, guys! Been a while since I did anything with this thread.

Well, it took a while, but I finally found somone on e-bay selling E40K-era IG sprues for less than the price of a new kidney. so the Basilisk with the Comissar finally got it's loader.

Now the Comissar will have to find a new way to inspire his troops besides manhandling heavy shells without complaint, in burning heat, while wearing a huge black stormcoat! (Maybe he'll find time to dust off the jacket. I swear it doesn't look that dusty in real life.)

And now it's time for the Imperium to turn it's sites on recalling another venerable army, a few forgotten Great Companies of the famed Sons of Fenris. (In this rare instance "Sons of Fenris" is pronounced "Highland Wolves". No one knows why, but everyone agrees "Highland Wolves" sounds better than "Throat Warbler Mangrove".)

When I first started playing 2nd Edition, I wanted to paint an army covered in tartans. The character of Space Wolves seemed to fit the idea of Scottish clansmen better than any of the other chapters described in the rule book, and I love the large, unwieldy Great Companies that were presented on the army cards. (and they didn't even give up firepower. *sniffle*) So I pitched their Norse theme right in the garbage and stared painting.

It's a shame to let these guys rot in results of my very first painting attempts, so they will now step off of those gauche square bases and answer the re-call of the Emperor in (hopefully!) much fancier dress.

Here is my first attempt at dressing up two packs of Grey Hunters.

My dressing up of these guys consists of cutting them out of their old square bases, covering them with Nuln Oil, highlighting with Shadow Grey, 2nd Highlighting with Space Wolf Grey (yes, the bottles are old too.......) adding pack marks, and then putting them on new bases.

Plus, of course, adding new seargents. I'm quite fond of my seargents.

Here is a closeup of the first seargent.

His chainsword was taken from an E40K era Khorne Berzerker. (Berzerkers aren't supposed to have chainswords anyway....)

.

Here is a closeup of the 2nd Seargent.

The big axe was stolen from a dead Beastman. (Proabably in real life as well as in the modeling effort)

And here is a closeup of the 3rd Seargent, who is still a work in progess.

Looking for alternate close-combat weapons to add to seargents, I fell in love with the idea of a Space Wolf^H^H^H^H...... <cough> Highland Wolf using a Ripper Gun for a close quarters work. I decided I just didn't care that fluf said it was for Ogryns only. It fires a massive spray of shells at close range, probably makes much more noise than a bolter, and is built strong enough to be used as a battering-your-enemy-on-the-head weapon even by a man with powered exo-skeleton armor. And besides, it looks good. What's a clansman not to like?

The axe in his other hand is from an Ork Kommando.

What a great idea making your Marines a Highland chapter. Really love the tartan shoulder armor.

Dwarf Supreme and Primarch: Thanks! I'm having a lot more fun repainting this old army than I thought I would.

Legion: Maybe I'll nick-name the 1st seargent "Connor". He's got a huge sword with moving parts that can probably be broken down to fit into a briefcase. That just *had* to be stolen from the Kurgan. ;-)
