You need to use a toothpick or similar to pull the resin to the edges or anywhere else you want it to go. It'll level itself out over time or, if you end up with a few dips or scratches, you can add another layer to fill them.
The below photos show a small thing I did, mainly as a tester. The photos aren't great as they're off my phone but you may get a slight idea. I painted the base blue/grey before adding the effect (woodland scenics).

Stu, that looks nice! I think I might have tried something a bit too complex too early. Seems to work a lot better on larger flatter areas where you can work the stuff.
