Amazing work. Did you freehand the Omega and the Arrows? I still can't do a good job of them...

Oh my gosh, no. Only the large ones on the roof hatch. All the other symbols and the Omega chapter icons are decals. I am a firm believer in not re-inventing the wheel. If I have the decals to the right size and scale I will incorporate them rather than try to freehand and not have as sharp a finish.

I know I can blend decals in well based on experience, but equally know my freehand skills are not up to snuff. So I always play to my strengths, I.E. technique and trickery rather than steady hand and raw brush talent. But for me, that's ok, I know my limitations and am comfortable with them.

I actually posted this way back in April and it might give a bit of insight into how I go about my painting. I hope it helps explain why I paint the way I do and it is as interesting as it was liberating for me to write it.

Making peace with my daemons

It is slightly off topic I know, but probably answers your question in a bit more detail :)

totally agree with you!! no more words can be added.

And, of course, excellent work on this ultras! I had some feelings like you in the past when I was modelling me as an illustrator.

The conclusion is:

ok, you are you, do your best!!!

cheers

Wow amazing detail, hard to believe that these guys are only 6mm! Love the little hazard stripes on the drop pods, those are a great touch!

Thanks guys, really appreciate that. The next detachment is coming along quite nicely and is probably the one I am most excited to see finished as it is the first one to really pull together some of the weathering. As that was one of the main objectives of this project it is one of the units that will give me an indication as to what the overall look is going to be and if it works or not at that scale.

With that in mind I will see about taking a few tighter close-up shots as a few people have emailed me for a bit more detail about the methods used. I will see if I can answer those in the next blog post.

Until now I have always thought that "Ultra-" was short for "Naff-", but this looks very very nice and gritty indeed.

Lovely work Carl, nice to see some drop ship work here, I was following your 40k stuff and had some inspiration from that to start collecting Ultras again.

Cheers

That is some fine weathering! Can you post some quick pointers on how to achieve it?

No problem. Follow the link to the blog in the post above and it's all in there.

Thanks Aaron, glad you found it useful. Not done with the 40K version by a long way, it's just been put on ice whilst I focus on Epic again.

... And thanks to everyone else for the encouraging words. I must admit I am finding it nice to spend a bit of quality time on Epic again after pursuing other game ranges for the past few (several) years. Much appreciated :)

The most important question is... are we going to see these guys at an Epic UK tournament in the coming year? :)

I think that is probably unlikely, it isn't on my plan for next year I'm afraid. Sorry.

The pace the force is growing is very impressive considering the amazing quality and effort you're putting on them! Very much enjoying this!

Love the Pods.

Cheers!
