My experience has been the exact opposite of PGs, I found the Krylon Matte not as flat as the Dullcote.

Whatever you get, be sure to head to Michaels armed with a 40% off coupon.

It could do with location.
I can't see location here on tapatalk, but dullcote changed formulas a few years ago. It's definitely not as dull as before.

Something about toxic agents ;)

that's the spray. the paint on version is still the same toxic brew. some issue with aerosols...

I'll try to pick up both krylon matte and the paint on dullcote today and do some tests.

I've heard the same thing. Dullcoate worked for me for years and then all of a sudden it was semi-gloss.

Interesting to hear that the liquid still works

Seems to me like krylon matte is more effective than dullcote, at least in Canada.

I used to spray with GW:s old varnish. It wasn't terribly nice with its semiglossiness (bordering on full gloss). I always imagined that I would add a layer of matt on top, but I never did.

Since then I have bought an airbrush. No more aerosols. Plenty of other nastiness to go around anyway, though. I have tried a mixture of 2 tamiyas matte medium to 1 tamiya gloss varnish. Extremely flat. I am actually thinking of reducing the amount of matt medium. Trick is that airbrushing matt varnish can cause it to turn white. This can be avoided by very careful mixing and repaired by painting over the whitened areas with gloss (or so I am told...).

Hey folks, I'm new to 6mm. How do you seal your minis? For my 28s and 15s I use krylon crystal clear coat, then dullcote, then hand paint Matt varnish on any shiny bits I missed. Would that also for 6mm, or would that be too thick of a varnish that may obscure detail?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers

You can strip off paint from plastic by the way using a cleaner call Simple Green, with out damaging the plastic. I soak them in it for a 24 or so and have at them with a old toothbrush. Repeat as needed ... You can get it at hardware stores, grocery stores, etc. ...

My test batch yesterday pretty much got wrecked, good thing I was just trying out schemes. I normally put a pretty thick coat of gloss on. That definitely doesn't work in 6mm. The cross belt detail on the assault marines was obscured.

Ah well, that's what tests are for.

Thanks for the advice fellas, I think I'll go with a thin coat of glosscote followed by a thin coat of dullcote...maybe two....

Do you have a local craft store like Michaels? If so check out the Krylon Gloss and Matte sprays if they sell them. Great coverage, and very good prices

I may try the Krylon Matte ... with one of my 40% off coupons ... :whistle

Not for the price you pay. The Purity Seal product is a decent semi-gloss and I have used it in the past but you can get very good sealants in gloss and matte for less money than the GW stuff.

I highly recommend the Krylon products and since they are used by artists and people who do crafts they are easy to find.

I use the GW purity seal - is that enough? Should I use something along side it?

Two coats of Vallejo matt varnish, painted on with an old brush.

Is this including the purity seal - the can is almost full so don't want to waste it.
