I think it is better for units to match the scale of other similar units. That way all infantry have a common scale, all AVs have a common scale, and all titans have a common scale. Sure, that leaves thing like war walkers and dreadnought in a gray in-between area, but that is okay too. Playablity shouldn't be discounted in favor of some OCD, one-size fits all approach.

Agreed. I'm not interested in "true scale."

I think 2mm would have been awful, like others have stated, just use counters then. Minature gaming to some extent is about enjoing the visual appeal of the minatures. That is why I tend to like the exagerated sculpts as opposed to the 'true scale' ones. To me a good looking, visually interesting minature isn't just a scale reduction it is a sculpture with emphasis and slight exagerations that cause it to look heroic and kick ass from a distance.

As Semajollissor stated, 'True Scale' isn't the be all and end all. In fact I don't recall (except for the various scales posted on FW for Epic) that Epic is 6mm 'scale'. It is ok in a game if the Titan isn't exactly to 'scale', or a space craft. If someone makes them that way, and you like how it looks that is great, but it isn't an exteme necessity, at least in my book.

Epic isn't played upclose, and personally I really like to be able to recognize and appreciate my paintjob and the sculpts I spent a small fortune on when I am playing.

Just to echo DS's views on "True Scale"- it can make huge swathes of model collection redundant.

It is the same with Starship combat games. So long as Battleships are bigger than Cruisers, which in turn are bigger than Destroyers, it does nt matter that these are nt to an exact same scale- just a good approximation.

I would really hate 2mm infantry- just as well have nt got into Dystopian Wars then!

OTOH, 2mm looks really nice for ancients (my opinion).

Insisting on truescale isn't very practical from either a gamer's or a modeller's point of view. Keeping scale consistent on the same model isn't necesarily a good idea either. Particularly when it comes to infantry. You really need to change proportions and exaggerate some details to have a good 6mm miniature. Simply reducing a larger model means that faces become featureless, hands just become one with the arm etc. It also depends a lot on which material you cast the miniature in. Resin holds more detail than plastic or metal for example. Another issue is paint: A super-detailed resin cast infantryminiature may not be very practical to paint in large quantities, simply because the thickness of even carefully applied paint will obscure much of the detail. A simple miniature with the right details exaggerated is more likely to look good than a truescale miniature, where everything is just a mess of paint.

But in Ancients you dont have to worry about Land raiders and Titans for relative scale. I can imagine that simply mass of troops would look good.

I also should have said that medievals and especially renaissance, i.e. pike and shot, looks great in 2mm. There's only 3 troop types in the latter (pike, shot, cavalry) so it's very easy to tell what is what. Likewise for napoleonics but people love the fancy uniforms in those. And even for those games, we're not really talking 1:1 representation like all GW games.

My first hobby was plastic scale models so for me accurate scale is preffered, although this will not stop me getting models just because they are not to scale with the infantry. After all if this were the case i would not have 95% of my titan collection as most are under scale.

As to numbers of miniatures on the table, as stated above EA is set up more as a tournament set of rule which work best with several thousand point armies. Thats why i liked E40K as it allowed you to field a huge amount of troops and still finish a game in a reasonable amount of time. We occassionally had really big games with hundreds of units on the table which was great fun.

I dont game ;D so for me itsthe just the challenge and fun of painting minatures, I like 6mm and find it the most
enjoyable to paint, construct and convert, That mixed in with a great fondness of the 40k world including books etc
make the hobby more enjoyable for me. Its simply asthetics ;D so i dont have to worry about moving troops round
a gaming table ;)

Maybe one day i will field some troops regards epic

Maybe 2mm would be the right scale for a titan-focused game? If Adepticus Titanics made a return, imagine the awesomeness of 10-12 titans on each side, surrounded by some supporting troops and vehicles in 2mm. The troops would the there as much to show off the scale as for being actual game pieces.

No. This has been a short answer to a short question.
