Doc: When I am painting lots of red I use the Blood Angels Red in a spray can for the base coat and wash the figs with a brown or dark red, depending on the effect I'm going for. Then all you have left to do is trim out the details.
If you can't find the red spray, my second choice would be prime white and use 2 dark red wash coats. The first will get the bulk of the color and the second will smooth out any irregularities from the first wash and darken it up. I usually use a thinned paint for the first to get a bit better coverage and an ink (with a touch of paint to kill the shininess) for the second.
Of course, styles vary and you may not like that, but I find it quick and effective.

####! was thinking of going for word bearers and just having my chosen as Abaddons first company lending a hand to the word bearers. Its not as if the dark red is too far from the black of the BL. Plus the cult marines are going to be there respective colours obviously. So there is going to be a mix of colour.
Taz and Neal, thanks for the tips, will try and find a way of getting the colour i want after i got the comp minis out of the way.

neal - I use a black undercopat and then drybrish style the figs to get the shadows and outlines. Yes you need two thicker coats, but I like it. I used white u/coat for the Bezerkers which I wanted a brighter red.
