I use my Dremel to file off my plastics and metals, works quick and painlessly.

welll....lets see... I use a soft grinding disc mostly, unless there is alot of metal to be ground, in which case I switch to a harder one. I havent had too much trouble with the soft plastic, but then, I don't go really crazy about filing every single burr off either. Mainly I get the bottom smooth, the really big chunks, and let the rest go. If it really irritates me, I will get my Xacto and cut some of the lines off, but usually only for a piece that I am going to really detail, ie, a command stand. Also, I have a clamp to hold my Dremel onto the table, so I don't have to move it, just move the mini to it.
There you go, van.

Quote (vanvlak @ 20 2005 July,08:21) | Quote (The_Real_Chris @ 20 2005 July,09:08) | I can't file effectively to save my life, I use a modling knife to get rid of the mould line. My most hated mould line incidentally is on the head of the original plastic guardsman. *shudder* However they all go into their bases fine! |
Just occasionally headless, otherwise fine...... (sorry Chris, couldn't resist). I'm currently having big problems with my Hat 9that's the name of the co.) Dacians (1/72 scale) - the plastic is VERY soft, and it tends to fray when filed and make a worse mess. My knife skills are miserable (or perhaps I needed a new blade), but now I intend to try some very fine abrasive paper we use for specimen preparation here at Univ. the joys of research..... | Vanvlak - unless you really want to live a nightmare - DONT use any kind of file on soft plastics like HAT! I do use files on plastics - just not the soft soapy plastic that 1/72 figures tend to be made of...
The secret is to use a very sharp craft knife and keep changing the blade often (blades are cheap just buy more!). It is still kinda painful... but not as bad as the stringy furry mess you will make with a file or blunt knife! You will find you get pretty quick with the craft knife - and also that the blades dull suprisingly fast!
I'm a big fan of HAT and other 1/72 ancient stuff and am planning some sort of hellenistic thing in the near future... good luck with the dacians!! Apparently some companies are shifting to a better type of plastic which is a lot more workable (you can file and glue it with greater ease), but I haven't come across it myself yet.

I have bags of old Airfix 1:72 troops made from this horrible stuff, it really is dreadful to work- the best of luck to you V, I couldn't face slicing the lines off each one!
And to answer the orignal question- I use my modelling knives to remove the mould lines on ALL my troops and vehicles, and carfeully trin the bases if the won't fit into the holes (very rarely have this problem with new bases though).
Cheers, ~G
