so what is the currently accepted "best" way to prime models for the best looking paint job (as opposed to quickest)?

white undercoat for colour clarity then hand apply base colours, or coloured primer?

It really depends on the look you want, and the color. If I'm undercoating a single color, like on several of my Guard armies, I tend to prime (often white, but my Steel Legion/Cadians got primed black) then airbrush the basecoat. However the Necromunda gang I'm painting is getting hand application due to the fact I need to basecoat with four very different colors: Hawk Turquiose, Snot Green, Bronzed Flesh, and Chaos Black.

I'm not sold on the color primers yet. I tried one when I was working on my Orks last year and wasn't overly impressed. I used SG's method for most of my nids (spray prime white, airbrush based red) as it saved me a bunch of time but I usually base by hand. Either way I like how things come out via those two ways rather than with the color primer.

The most abundant color is usually the best way to figure out what color to prime things. For the less opaque/lighter stuff I go white, otherwise I'd say black. I've been using grey primer a bit too (my Elves got it along with some spray silver, and so did my Mercs and few other side projects) and that works fine too.
