To be honest Ive never tried any form of heat treatment to remove paint from a plastic model. But the plastic used in such models is pretty soft. If it was a hard acrilic plastic i reakon boiling water wouldnt do in any harm. I used a hairdryer to heat up a plastic titan before so I could bend its legs into a new position. This worked pretty well. Id imagin sudjecting such a model to 100c for more than a few minutes would deform its surface badly.

I would not put anything plastic in boiling hot water. I use a household cleaner called Simple Green, to clean paint off plastics. Soak the piece for hours, scrub with a toothbrush and repeat until you're satisfied. Works for me !

Hi!
I tried the boiling water once, the results were to say the least...not good. Such I echo Legion4's warning not to try that "remedy".

I've found common ethanol (93%) to be great for removing acrylics and Citadel spray primers from both plastic and metal models. Leave the models soaked for a couple of hours then brush with something to "open" flakes in the paint. Soak again over night and give a good brushing. I haven't tested this method on resin yet but I have yet to ruin any metal and plastics this way. I don't think the method works on enamel paints though... at least not gloss.
Cheers!

Will any of the above listed methods for removing paint from plastics also loosen the troops from their bases? I ask because I am trying to rebase a group of Space Marines that I bought from square to rectangular bases.

I've fouind that Simple Green tends to greatly weaken basic plastic cement and the figures come out with hardly any coaxing. If supa glue was used then you dont have much hope I'm afraid.
Give it a go and see anyway! If it doesnt work, well all my old Marines and Guard are still on the old square bases anyway...who cares!

Yeah, Simple Green is great stuff. I bought a gallon of the concentrated stuff last night, didnt read the jug (it says to dilute it for plastics) and soaked some test pieces all night. Didnt damage the plastics at all, and the paint comes off easy. I have mixed results with the rebasing effort, however. The ones based with plastic cement come off easy, while the one based with superglue do not come off at all. I broke one piece trying to get it off. Sadly, since the bag I bought is a mixed bunch of troops from all versions of the game, it is guesswork to figure out what they used to base em with. If anybody has any suggestions on how to unbase superglue (If it is even possible) without destroying the plastics, let me know.

Super-glue De-solve (available at hobby shops usually) may work, but what we do is cut the black plastic bases in pieces and sand off the excess until you get to the fig's gray (or blue, etc.) base. And file it to shape to fit the new base. Very Time consuming, but effective ...

I was hoping to save the square bases, also, because I have some other pieces to mount to them, namely Chaos stuff, old trolls and minotaurs among other things. I hadn't heard of the super glue dissolver, will try to get alhold of some of it.

I bought some stuff that is supposed to dissolve superglue, but it isn't doing the job. Apparently it cannot get down into the space underneath the minis where the superglue is. I have even cut the bases apart and applied it from a sideways angle, with no success. Right now I have resorted to what you guys are doing, cutting the bases apart and cutting the minis off with a hobby knife. Works good this way, but it is very tedious, and messy. However, the stuff that is supposed to dissolve superglue does strip the paint, flocking and everything right off within a minute. Too bad it costs 2.99 for a little bottle, compared to the simple green at 9.00 a gallon.
my 2 cents ,

By far and away the best thing for removing paint from metal minis for UK players is something called Nitromors - the green tin is slightly better than the others but they are all similar. Basically you soak it for about 5 minutes then rinse off all the goo. The paint falls off! You can brush with a toothbrush to get any out of the cracks but it really is astonishingly simple. Get it from homebase or other DIY shops.

Forgot to say - Nitromors turns plastic minis into a messy blob, but dissolves superglue superbly.
I was given a warlord mk III titan on tuesday and it was COVERED in superglue blbs where the guy has stuck skulls etc. to it, then painted it with thick enamel layers.
After 5 mins in the nitromors it was like new, and is now undercoated on it's new base

Hmmm sounds pretty cool. That gave me a thought... Has anyone tried using Brake Fluid? I know it will strip the paint straight off a car
