Hi!
I haven't given it a name yet your welcome to give it one though.
Let me know how it turns out, since I have used this titan variant for years.
Once AT changed into SM 2nd edition, close combat titins became rare, because firepower was so effective, same with even later versions. Close combat variants have its place, but you need to give it some thought first. Here are so tips..
Don'ts
Do not charge flat out in the open. It may seem silly to point out, but given the usual GW game attitude of line them up and charge, its worth mentioning. Most game boards have woods or buildings to hide behind. Manuever into position. THe reavers extra move is vital in this.
While the volcano cannon is a powerful weapon, its only there for emergencies, in case you get immobilized on your way in. Remember every turn your not in close combat with the enemy titan is a oss for you.
Do's
Flank the enmy titan if you can charge it from behind better. Somtimes I charge it straight to the opponents baseline then doubleback to get it in the rear. It puts the opponent in a pickle since if he turns to face me, he leaves his back to the rest of the army. It may take an extra turn to do, but its usally worth it.
NEVER go for the reactor as damage in close combat. It has the nasty habit of blowing up and carrying it with you. Go for a head shot, even on a low damage roll it puts you in a good position to take it out next turn.
Let me know how it turns out...

Most of Primarch's comments are tactically sound. Stay under cover and go for his flank(s), good advice for all forces ... AFVs, Grunts, Titans etc. However, I'd only close the range to get a better shot. I never have engaged in C/C on my own volition, and that was rare. I'd always start blasting the enemy Titan(s) with my own, off-board, and anything else I could spare, as early as I could, like Turn 1. Those tactics work for me, but as the tactical commander on the ground, you're going to have to make your own decisions.

I think I may try that tactical advice, stay under cover and go fo the flanks.
I have a tendancy to want to go for an all out battle on all fronts. Doesn't always work...
Cheers
Chris

Frontal attacks are costly as we see in the ACW and WWI. ?Most Epic and 40K games I see use this costly method - avoid it ! ?Flanking maneuvers are the basis of all modern tactical (and strategic for that matter) operations. ?There are 3 forms of Offensive operations in the US Army : 1) Envelopment (single and Double), ie. Flanking. ?2) Penetration - think Blitzkrieg, finding a weak point, massing and penetrating at that point (ie. schwere punkt). ?3) Frontal - on line massive attack, rarely if ever used by the US however, most Arab and 3rd World Armies use it for obvious reasons. ? With obvious results ... Another page from the L4 SoTR ! ?

Hi!
Under versions later than the original AT, frontal charges with titans are nearly always suicidal. AT titans were somwhat more resilient to long range fire, but would get toasted to if a nemesis or similarly heavy armed titan got a bead on it.
One army you might try a close combat titan with is tyranids. SInce tyranid titans are not that heavy hitting at long range you will more than likely close the gap. While their titans are better at close combat that imperials, I use this as a "nuetralizing" tactics, because it will take a couple of turns for the bio-titan to take this type of titan down, meanwhile the rest of my army concentrates on his troops.....

Plus something else to remember, as Primarch points out, the version or versions of the rules you use are going to effect how you can do things. ?For example 40K (not E40K) lends itself to close combat frontal attacks. L4 SoTR - any rule system like that is not a good rule system - play WHFB ! ?

SoTR= [Legion 4's] School of Tactical Realism.
Its my little friendly jibe about him and his tactical colour schemes, real world effects and bits and bobs that he injects from his myriad of impressive real world experiences as a professional soldier
---------
Back to the CC Titans, I wonder how much the new EA rules will affect their use?
On one hand, CC is far more devastating and 1 side must end up broken and retreating, so once you are in its going to be decided
On the other, you can only do a single move into CC so no triple move sprint accross the table, and Overwatch is *Nasty*, so getting there is now even more difficult

Although I just posted it as a possible BFG Chaos ship name, this one seems appropriate: Evicerator
Or maybe....Decapitator
Maybe you have some better medical nasties though?

I'm not very good with names, either of these sound good to me or you could call a "reaver, pitbull assault pattern"....

Yep - sure did, it is pretty simular to my strats, the reason why I picked Dark Angels is because I hate just sitting around, I always take the fight to my enemy, normally by crushing the centre after using a refused flank, or using a pincer movement, end of the day I would never use a balanced attack, I want the odds stacked in my favour.
I once played a 1500 point Syntha vs Syntha VOID game, killing every single one of my opponents models without losing any of my own, mainly due to out manuvering, the correct application of firepower (knowing where the 'hinge' of your opponents line) and a smattering of luck.
It is still regarded as a legendary story at our local club .
