Boy did I learn this one today. After reading your post I went past the main train store in town. I asked for the z stuff. It was on a one shelf about 3 feet long and the average price per building was around $14 USD. Then I asked about the N stuff. It was a on six shelves and covered a range of prices including some industrial items under $6 USD. Wow.
To put it in perspective, the EPIC ADMINISTRATUM BUILDING from forgeworld is about $15 USD and it is a lot larger then most of the Z stuff I saw for $20 USD.
Anyway, thanks for the insight. I did notice some "bits" boxes that I might raide later on.

I'm thinking of getting some of the terrain, but would appreciate views first.
I'm not gonna bother with buildings at the moment, well maybe a library/ruined library. I'll carry on using the runied scenery from the box for now.
I am thinking of the road section though, with the extra tank trap/straffed road sections and also the line defences. And finally some bunkers.
I would appreciate some feedback first telling me whether they are worth it, or where there are better equivalents, or even effective ways of making my own.
Cheers.

I have the pieces that you speak of and I find them of the typical good standard, whether or not equivalents are better is something I cannot answer. I have bought several sets of roads that FW have to offer and I agree it can be expensive, but I think Jimbo knows more about other sources to say whether there are better alternatives. I, personally like what I have and would need to take a look around to see whats on offer, but I am pretty much hooked on the scenary pieces that FW have done for epic

if you are going down the non-forgeworld route, try and get 1/200th scale scenery, as you may find that the1/300th stuff is too small

I have yet to run into anyone producing the quality of FW. I bought four roads and four road ex sets myself. I really dig 'em. Although, I found that I need to get more. They come in a very unuseful arrangement. Four straights, one curve, one 't' section and two cross roads. So, it is impossible to make city blocks without having extras. I would have preferred one crossroad and have an extra 't' or curve section. Also, the expansion consts of straight roads cut in half. Again, this means that you need to use two expansion peices to equal one straight peice. This can start to get pricey. I don't think the road system was sufficiently planned out. It is really too bad that they won't sell the things individually. I really couldn't recommend buying these unless you have a plan. I had to go into my illustrator program to come up with a decent road configuration that would leave the least amount of extras. No one is really making roads. Except the train people. Busch has a road system. Faller has one also. As for buildings and other accessories. C in C has some nice stuff, so does TimeCast. Armorcast has an alternative to the FW tank emplacements and dugouts. OLD CROW MODELS has some excellent modular building designs. Also Leva Productions is another great place to get stuff. There are a bunch of others that I have bought stuff from that I cannot recommend. I hope this helps.

One recommendation, though they are very difficult to find, is the Snapdragon Studio 6mm stuff, which in many ways is very comparable to FW. However it is no longer in production, though I did hear that when Snapdragon are at a show they do sometimes have their 6mm stuff.

Left: Snapdragon Power Stations Middle: GZG Full Thrust Space Station Right: Battletech Warehouses Background Snapdragon "huts", very orky

Another picture of the huts

Slightly dark, but this is a Snapdragon Bunker

I must admit, that while I dont have the funds to buy what I want (who does?), I dont really see the point of buying roads. Dont they actually get in the way of the game? I can see how the roads could be a goodf effect, but I always thought that they would be raised above the gaming table, and therefore cause problems. Of all the terrain features, I think that these are the first that people should make themselves, with flat plasticard/cardboard. What do those who have the roads actually think of them in regards to asthetics and game management?

I use two sorts of roads
Dirt tracks

they are from Snapdragon and have hedges which can make life difficult, but usually that is the point...
and roads within an urban area

which is "un"difficult terrain in an otherwise difficult environment.
roads are useful (the extra 5cm makes a difference) and make for a "realistic" looking battlefield.
If I had the funds I would get the FW roads. I have been considering making a terrain board with a "motorway" through it.

Yeah, I know snapdragon. They used to make awsome stuff. It is a real shame they are no longer around. I bought a few small peices of theirs some years back. There are too many people producing shoddy 6mm stuff. Besides FW. However, we really need a good alternative to FW. They have received too much of my money. They also don't seem to give a (expletive) about their customers.

The snapdragon stuff looks good, I'll have to see if I can find any of it.
I'll hold fire on the roads then. And just get some buildings for now.
I like those huts, it would really fit in well with the Orks.
Cheers guys.

I liked those Snapdragon huts & buildings from the first time I saw them on your site well over a year ago, Jimbo. ??I even e-mailed you, and you gave me the bad news - they are OOP ... ? As far as roads, I use the GEO-Hex cloth roads (& rivers) cut to shape, size and length. ?They stick to the GEO-Hex felt mat and are easy to use + don't look too bad. ?I even lightly spray painted a set black for urban roads vs. dirt tracks & trails. ? GHQ, GEO-Hex & Irregular make some nice Mid-Eastern buildings of all types, that with very little work, would make good Ork structures. ? I have some of them in my terrain collection.

Snapdragon also made some nice bunkers and emplacements (very similar and in some cases better than the FW stuff) and I have seen them appear on eBay now and then...
I did have a job painted lot of them, however lent them to a "friend" and I never saw them again (along with a load of scenery and Epic stuff)

I think I'll save snap dragon as a search on Ebay. (otherwise I'll forget). I dont very often look at scenery, I'll have to keep my eyes open more now.
One step at a time first. Once I have a large enough Ork horde, I'll look at getting a few pieces from FW and look out on Ebay. I also need to make and base the scenery you get with the epic40k game. I have plenty of that to start with, and about 8 epic size trees. Enough to make a very, very small forest
