Absolutely true. Freehand nets you higher marks usually, and NMM more so, even if the result is horrible. Imho well used metallics look superior to NMM, like Jakob Neilson's mini's..
In addition, painters towards the higher end of the spectrum have deliberately voted their competitors lower than they deserved in the past. Great painters, if they are also active on various forums, also seem to gain a fan club, and these guys can also exacerbate the situation. I saw two guys post low scores (including a 0) on an ex-heavy metal painters model once (not sure why).
Its one of the reasons why I haven't really gone for CMON yet, it seems abit elitist - there are plenty of models on there which are easilly up to table top standard, but only get 3-4, and some which deserve far higher than a 6. Some models, because of the artists name, get higher (8 or 9) than they might have done if they were by someone else..
But this is all ones guys opinion...
