I look forward to seeing what you do with bases for those marines.

I am so at a quandry with this.

I do not want to do the standard green outline to a square base with these with a little basing in amongst packed minis. The long bases seem to be more kind to basing, yet I am really trying to keep this 'old school' in the fact that I am using square bases.

I have looked at Imperial Fists minis from Cthulhu_gump and Vaaish (I think he uses his own bases??), and am coming to the realisation that a darker base would be better for the yellow marines.

Open to any ideas.

Thanks

Keep 'em coming chap...
Bases; brown i'd say, would work quite well, or maybe a sort of slate grey.
Vaish's bases are all done normally (though with consummate skill!) from what i remember!

I use the old square bases and sculpt the terrain on them in greenstuff. It lets me put the minis on in a little more random and interesting order instead of the standard layout. If you use a small enough brush though it's not too bad to paint around the minis. Dark bases do work well with yellow marines since it makes them pop more than a light base, though darker bases work better even with darker models because it doesn't back light the model letting you see the detail easier.

Thanks for that little insight Vaaish. I love what you have done with your bases. I am not sure if I have the patience to go that indepth - we'll see.

Ok. Just another update...

I went and bought me this little baby. It was at the cheaper end of the scale yet I wanted to see what it was like. At AUS$35 however, I should have just gone with the cool looking Citadel one perhaps.

I also decided to go with a cheaper model paint which has almost the same colour as my original basecoat. Remember, this is just to get the initial layer happening:

It is interesting to note just how much paint you actually get. Frankly I was not impressed by the volume. After adding water as my thinner however, I had a half-full bottle:

So I went out in this 37C degree day, set everything up, connected the can and then.......nothing. That's right, NOTHING!  After adjusting everything, I can only conclude that the can of compressed air had nothing in it.

These situations are so disappointing. You actually set yourself up to do something only to get slapped down with such bad luck. Oh well, I will update this after going back to the hobby store (maybe tommorrow in 39C weather) *sigh* and get a replacement.

Wow!

Have I been lazy or what!?

Ok, decided to spend this weekend painting and have been able to finish a few things. However maybe I should start from where I last left off....

I went and retrieved another can of air and had no problem there. Several weeks after this I attempted to do the base coat on a range of the minis as can be seen below:

15/03/09

The spray started off alright but then became a real hassle and started to cause alot of problems. It would just blow out air, and at other times spat paint out and then air again. I cleaned the nozzle twice and even thinned the paint right down (too much in fact), with still no go. All I ended up doing was wasting half a can of spray. The coverage on the land raiders was exceptionally poor:

I bought cheap and got cheap. Let that be a lesson.  It is annoying however as I would expect cheap to be cheap and maybe not last as long as the good equiptment, yet less than 1 use is ridiculous. So I ended up spending the time placing the base coat on everything again with the ultra thinned down paint.

I also wasted some time procrastinating over what was next going to be up for painting:

The next time I was to touch the minis was the weekend of the 28/03/09. This is being posted next.

I have started to use a wet pallet for the painting and I must say that it makes life a whole lot easier. I am now able to do the intricate detailing for numbers and lines for symbols that was previously very 'hit and miss' I thoroughly encourage anyone who is painting to use a wet pallette.

For this batch I came to the conclusion that the Tamiya Yellow paint is not what I am looking for. The GW paints have a much richer colour and texture so I went back to using these. I also made the decision to drybrush and not attempt to blend as the minis are small, and I want them painted for game play, not to win any awards. Hence, a painted army is better than a bare plastic or metal army.

So after the Sunburst Yellow > Gryphon Sepia Wash, I then drybrush Sunburst Yellow lightly over the models. Then I added all the detailing with the help of the wet pallete, and was able to finish 3rd company's Rhinos (still have a command one to do) + 1 Rhino of the 5th Company Devestators:

I am pretty happy with how these turned out.

I have today just completed 8 whirlwinds as shown below.

So here is the lot all painted so far. Troops are still to come after I decide what bases they will go on. Also they may seem a little plain, however I thought on this lot, less was more. If you have any suggestions to make them stand out more, please advise

The symbol is a decal that I cut up and placed on the doors. I like how they turned out. I placed a yellow wash/ink to help them stay on the mini. After I spray them all with a sealant, they should be fine:

And all together:

Nice looking Fists Froggy, cool use of the bases, I guess you had a few spare from your FOW collection.

Cheers

Thanks for that. I am happy with the way the minis are coming out so far, and the fact that I am learning a few tips and tricks along the way.

Re Bases: I decided to go down to the local games store in the city. FOW bases are AUS$15 for 56 bases. At that price, and for the look, they are well worth the money. I definitely will be picking up another pack of these next week for future projects.

Really cool looking 'Fists Frogbear. Sucks about the airbrush though. Never used one myself, but I like to think I'm doing fine without one. It looks like you are!!

Very impressive, I might steal the FoW bases for vehicles idea.

For the Whirlwinds, have you thought about painting the missile tips red?
I think that this might lend them a more "finished" look, whereas the white you are using now seems to appear that you haven't gotten around to painting them yet.

I was thinking about the red tips. I wasn't sure. I may do it. The ones that I have seen however do remind me of - dare I say it - nipples  :sigh:

Hi All

Well with Taccom down I dedicated my time to getting some more stuff done. I gave this weekend as the deeadline to finish my current range of minis and I found that I was hurrying to get them done - however I finally got it done.

Now I decisded to base the minis as my last post and had sand glued to the bases. A friend of mine then talked me out of doing the bases with the minis on them so I took all the vehicles  off their bases and re-glued and painted up the bases. These can be seen below:

I am going for a contrast to the yellow and I do not see why there would not be blue tinged planets out there due to some mineral that is in excess of other items. I will build on some lava bases when I start doing some land speeders which should really look neat.

Now these took a while and I still need to edge these with black however I have enough for my next round of vehicles I need to paint.

Now an obvious observation is that the vehicles will not sit straight on the bases due to all the rocks. You are correct. And while this nags me a little, the excess superglue I placed on the connecting areas (some of it not connection by much at all), appears to hold for now. I may consider some future greenstuff for the next lot to get a greater coverage for the glue to stick to the base. As you can see I ended up with some 'funny' results which not everyone would agree with:

Note: They do not appear this blue when you see them in person. It was obviously the format of the pic I took and I could not be bothered changing it right now

More to come...
