@transfers: I heard that if you apply varnish on the area where the transfer should be FIRST, then attach the transfer (after varnish is dry), then varnish again, you don't get the frost (or whatever it's called).

I did that, actually. Gloss varnish first then regular. Sometimes it seems that there are still irregularities on the surface that causes this to happen.

maybe the gloss varnish doesn't agree with the regular? Did you try using only regular varnish? But to be honest, I really have no experience with transfers :)

I don't really have any much experience with transfers either sorry. Perhaps ask on a painting forum for advice, somewhere like coolminornot perhaps. Others must have more experience at making it work. Perhaps it needs a certain order of the varnish or particular brands work better than others or something.

Beautiful work as always too.

I didn't want to mention the decals, everything else looked so good. My method with transfers is to apply them after I've finished varnishing the mini, this provided a better surface for the decal to sit on. I cut the decal as close to the print as possible using a hobby blade (you can also buy decal scissors, but I've no experience with those). I dampen some paper towel and place the decals on it, pouring a little water on top (saves fishing around in a cup of water). Apply a coat of Microsol to the mini (were the decals going). Using a damp paintbrush, I slide the decal onto the mini and line it up with the brush. Then using a cotton bud/cue tip I press down in the middle and use a rolling action to remove any bubbles and flatten out the decal. Next I apply a coat of Microset, at which point I'm usually finished. If the decals still standing out, you can give it a coat of varnish (so long as you know it won't react with the decal), I use Vallejo vanishes and I've never had any issues.

For the above mini, I would try a coat of Microset, followed by a coat of varnish.

Gloss varnish, decal, then flat varnish? Or gloss, flat, decal? The latter wouldn't work.

Gloss, decal, then gloss to seal it and then flat.

That's strange, then! Solvaset would help, but I've never found it necessary when applying the decal over gloss, even if it's brushed-on glosscoat. I can only blame bad luck.

Recently I was given a box set of a game called Leviathans and I promised to paint up the 8 models that came with it. It's a rather fun game that has much of the feel of BFG but easier to explain and quicker to play, but the pre-assembled and pre-painted models are something of a travesty. The casts are good, but the assembly has everything from gigantic gaps to glue fingerprints over the hull and each ship was cast with an obnoxiously large number of pieces. I think the destroyers here are somewhere around 13 or 14 pieces. Anyway, it's also fortunate that the amount of glue was rather light so they crack apart fairly easily so everything was easily fixed.

These two are the first batch and the counterpart British destroyers are on the table next. Enjoy.

Thanks guys!

And we are done with the British DD's. Well, not quite, still need some varnish to make them ready for play but after that we are good. Next in line is the french cruiser. It's all ready cleaned up,gap filled, and ready for priming, but it'll be a few weeks till that happens.

Man your skill is amazing as ever. Question, what are these cast out of? You said they are pre painted are they that flexible rubber plastic that prepainted DND and pathfinder dungeon monsters are made out of?

I can't wait to see the bigger ships, your color choices are awesome!
