IIRC 'bolt' type ammunition in 40k is caseless (Ie: there are no shells).

It's only the rule of cool that has led to depictions of bolt shells spilling out of boltguns... but background-wise, caseless. :)

Yes, many Fluff pics show bolters ejecting spent shell casings ... And we can do "caseless ammo" today. ?H&K did it for their G-11, IIRC, years ago ... still don't know why caseless has not caught on ? ???? ? And I've seen films of AC-130 Spector Gunship crews using a coal shovel to chuck out all the spent brass from the miniguns ! ?:D ? ?Regardless, I want some of these new Machys ! ?:)

.. still don't know why caseless has not caught on ?

Mainly because of storage problems (the small arms caseless ammuniton was very sensitive agains water and dust)
On the other hand, the use of such ammunition in battle tanks (such as Leopard 2), is common these days. All what is left after the shot is the bottom of the grenade (You save a lot of space in the tank if you don?t have to carry empty shells).
But IMO it?s much more fun with shells:

I guess the sound of the gun would be something like this:

Hehe. Gatling weapons are pretty scary! This is my own favourite videos of the weapons in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....search= I wouldn't want to find myself on he recieving end there.

I always imagined Bolters to be relatively slow fireing weapons. At least compared to what many modern automatic weapons are capable of. Gonsidering the size of the projectiles I can't imagine you could actually carry that many rounds.
