The gold this time around was a happy accident. I've usually done the standard scorched brown, burnished gold, gold+mithril, mithril route with some washes to add depth.

This time I decided to base with a mix of snakebite leather (balor brown) and black which as soon as I put it on the model looked like ancient gold. from there it was just a light bit of shining gold to hint at the metallic and build up on the upper edges, my usual burnished gold to further build it up and a few touches of burnished+minthril to finish it off once it was in place.

So basically what you are seeing as gold is something of a mix of NMM and true metallics I think. There's far less shiny bits in there than you're eye makes you think.

So I'm finally done with probably the crappiest thing I've painted in quite a while. These guys had far more issues than they should have from over complex paint mixes to having too little contrast and finally failing to even get a half decent photo. I may try again for individual shots as soon as I figure out some light setup that doesn't instantly erase all highlights and make them look like a three year old spit painted them.

Great work mate, I wouldn't be to hard on yourself. You have it all over most of us who struggle to get 50% of what you do. They look great, now we need a group shot of all your Mechs.

Cheers
Aaron

yeah those are beautifully painted, I know you have super high standards for yourself, but they look fantastic, super crisp, and cohesive, I'm not a fan of the models myself but when they're painted like that you might just have changed my mind :)

Thanks y'all, you are too kind. I believe now that I have decent shots that I'll eventually need to darken some of the hard shadows on these and that I lost too much contrast on the white legs from building the penultimate layer up to close to the final whites.

Anyway, I've got shots of the individuals that are far better than the initial ones I had last night. Enjoy.

Well now that vacation is past, photos are touched up and archived, and the evil Wolf Star is painted and binned, I'm trying to get back up to full production. The first step was finishing these crusaders tuesday and having the metals for the torso on the reaver prepped and washed for final highlights. My goal is to see the torso well on the way to completion come the end of next week. It really needs to be done soon for Epicomp and to clear the way for production of a ton of smaller bits. Anyway, here are the crusaders... more when the torso is done :)
