I must admit that I have never been particularly inspired by Titans, and usually turn away from anything super heavy or larger. The new Warhound continues this trend, and so I got to thinking about making a titan legion which is completely scratch built. Obviously, this would be a long term project, but I like the thought of each huge fighting machine being different from the rest and completely unique (although I may be persuaded to include an official Reaver or two as I like these minis).

That being said, I thought that I would start with a Warhound. My first point is the legs, as I think that this defines the whole look of the mini. I was thinking of something that looked more like ED209/Space Crusade Dreadnought. Would this get across the right feel for the mini? Any suggestions or comments? And how the hell are the 6mm IG supposed to fit in the GW Warhound anyway?

I too have never been a rabid Titan fan, I have about 25 or so of all types including Gargants, etc.  I bought SM1 before AT1. And as I said before, we use Titan sparingly.  I have a Pycho-Borg from Alternate Armies 15mm range that I'm going to use as a Chaos Titan.  And I was going to use the SC Dread as a Titan too, but traded it to a buddy.  So I think you can easily use larger scale models with little or no modification as Titans.  And I think there is a lot of stuff to choose from.  Grendal has some 25mm Fantasy (!) pieces that would work too, IIRC. So I say go for it !  And as far as scale, G/W has always been off !  No way will 10 troops fit in a Rhino or Land Raider for that matter ! :o   You'd be hard pressed to get one 6mm Guardsman in any Titan head !  But that's G/W ... and now F/W too ! :oo

Hi!

CS, I think the leg part is okay and will look good. A far greater problem will be the torso and more significantly the head. I can't say I have a good idea for the head part without looking silly.

CS, have you got any like sketches or pictures of what it is you want it to look like?

You could just use like plasticard to build up the body, and use another model as the head, as not to make it look dumb, as Primarch said.

Also, are you gonna stick to the standard titan configurations? Like, you build a titan with four hardpoints, and it is a warlord, but from "Ryza" forgeworld, instead of Mars or Lucious?

Cheers

Chris

Hi!

I remember in AT days you could build warlords with less than 4 weapons, maybe an interesting point to explore other configurations as well.

In my view, a worlord with less than 4 weapons is a waste of time. I think GW have come to agree that a Warhound has 2 weapons, a Reaver 3 and a Warlord 4.

If they produce a titan that fits in between a Warlord or an Imperator, I would love to have one, but what whould that have, 6 weapons?

I think Carl woodrow had the idea of making a kinda up gunned titan, I think he called it the Nemisis. And nothing really materialised from it...

Cheers

Hi!

Chris the "nemesis" is not a new idea, its from the orginial AT game where you could "double-up" on hard points giving it more weapon (6). Its the name for real heavy armed warlords. Back in AT the name was given in accordance to the weapons array it carried.

Nemesis were pretty scarry, but in AT were slowing moving due to the weight, the idea of warlords with less weapons is that they were faster.

Whilst taking the kids shopping and the obligatory stop at the toy shop, I have been looking at the "Bionicles" (made by Lego) which I think would make an excellent starting point to make scratch Titans from.  I was thinking of using a couple as Chaos conversions, but they could be good for your Scartch Built Legio Project

Well, I have tried to think about this from the very start all over again. For example, will a WarHound with four legs look too Tyranid? (Kind of At-At.) Would this work? I think that sticking to two would be best. That being said, there are basically two types of bipedal legs that I have in mind, sprinters - which are like human legs with a high knee joint - and horse - which are reversed so that the knee bends the other way and is more like the new mini. I like the 'horse' leg joints, but I would put a segmented set of toes on the feet, but now it is starting to sound like a Revenant.

For the rest, at one point I considered using the prow of an Imperial Gothic cruiser, back to back, but I think that this would not look good. I did think of having the cockpit as an observation bubble on the top, instead of under-slung. So far, these are just thoughts, and I will concentrate on getting the legs sorted out. Anyone have any good ideas and references for possible leg sets?

I picked up an old, original Warhoud over the weekend, and was surprised by just how small the mini was, I wil lhave to be careful.

In general, I will go with the smallest minis with two weapons are Warhound, medium with three are Reavers (maybe a couple with two weapons) and largest with four are Warlords. I wont use anything larger than a Warlord. I was also thinking of a dark green colour scheme, with industrial yellow and black details, or white heraldry.

Hi!

Regardless on well thought out beforehand the project is, I think there will be a lot of trial and error in the process, since conversion by its nature is difficult to predict its outcome. You may find not liking the original plan or discovering something entirely different/better during the process.

Of course the main thing is to have FUN with the process, it will make the final product more enjoyable.

In AT1/SM1, the Warlord Nemesis and Death Bringer types had 4 weapons and the less costly Night Gaunt and Eclipse types 2-3. ?I can configure some of mine as either type. ?The Reaver Hun varient - 2 weapons and Goth - 3. ?That's the way we did it in the "old days", during the Heresy and all the wars that followed... :;):

I may be tempted to make a Nemesis varient with one of the Mk3 Warlords when they are re-realeased. Even more weapons on the one body! Yay!!

Were there any other varients than the ones L4 listed?

Cheers

Absolutely. I have a general idea of what I would like, in mind (something more Battle-Tech) but nothing specific. I am just looking for a fantastic pair of legs!  :D

Once I have these, I will think about the rest of the mini and what goes well with them. This is generally how I build, starting with the most important part (in the case of the Warhound it is the legs, being a scout titan and swift) and build onto that. It is a long-term thing, but I will keep you informed.

I reviewed my Titans, this morning while being put on hold by my BANK !   But those Titan classes/varients were the original types. The Warounds had varients too (Mastiff and Wolf - issue 109 W/D), and you see that Forge World named their type varients also (Jackel and Wolf [again !]).  The names/varients were based on weapons configurations, not necessarily by weapons type.  W/D 109 also lists the Vandal varient of the Reaver.  But many of these are standardized configurations, like Left arm and Right arm always have the same weapon ie. Las-cannon and Auto-cannon respectively, for example ...   :)

Hi!

I think Legion4 listed all the ones I can remember or at a cursory glance at the source material.

I thought some of the names were quite good!  :)
