Hi. Is there still the interest for this? The first and second were fairly well attended, but the last one or two have passed without comment.

Is it just that the units are not inspiring, or are people just not interested? Would it be better to open it up to anything that people want?

I am tempted to ask people for suggestions for the next phase (which should start today).

Any comments are welcomed. Thanks.

Hi CS,
conversions made from readily available stuff are not easy; and there's not many sculptors here, which means troops are a tougher proposition, even if its something weird, like the Obliterators. I also think people would tend to bother less if the model is not related to the army they are working on.
I'd vote to keep it going though, with perhaps a slight modification: all the conversions would compete in a special category of the Epic modelling competition, open to them alone. These would of course be more publicised than other competition entries, but as they'd be in a category of their own, this wouldn't really matter. I'd start the competition entries from the very next project, excluding the stuff already presented (see, I stand to lose from this too, as I have had a couple of bitz here). As for a prize, if nothing else comes up, I'll sponsor a couple of Epic blisters from GW online myself - and call it the Mekprize or something. So there.
As for the next topic, something Orky would be sure to succeed - not the best of ideas, seeing that Ork models are generally available - but they're fun, and relatively easy. I'd say the odd Ork topic inserted on occasion would work wonders. For definitive participation, I'd say (no, don't tempt me, not a Vindicator AA! :p ) Nealhunts Drop-Kan proposal for Blood Axes.

I've been meaning to contribute more to these projects but sadly I just haven't found the time :(
I think the ECW is a great idea and it would be a great loss to cancel it completely. However things aren't working too well ATM so changes seems necessary.

1: Remove the time limit and perhaps instead start a new sub-forum in "Painting Converting" called ECW. Here you then have sub folders with each type unit and in each of these folders people can then start new threads with their version of the miniatures. Maybe start out with 5-10 different units/folders and then it is up to people to add whatever content they see fit/feel inspired to do.
This would also make the ECW threads a bit easier to browse and avoid too many pinned subjects (which can be a bit annoying at times :;): )

2: "Common availability". I can't really decide on this one. First of all it is difficult to define "common". Stuff easily found on Ebay? or stuff found in the online store? And what about sculpting (Green stuff or Plasticard)? Not everybody are equallly skilled in using this stuff.
The problem, as I see it, is that in order to build a model the way you like it, you might want to use bitz/techniques which not everybody will have access to. This puts certain limitations on the contributors. Great for the readers and people who will be copying the idea but maybe not the best incentive for people to contribute. If you are going to invest time and bitz to a project you'd usually try to achieve the best result possible.

I just don't know. It is certainly not an "either, or" situation but maybe there'd be more contributors if people just submitted whatever they came up with. You could then supply a list of alternative more commonly available components if you use a lot of OOP stuff. Usuallly I don't think it is the components used per se, but more the overrall concept of a model which inspires me to try out someone's ideas.
If you use any special techniques then supply a fairly elaborate step by step guide. Often an effect or technique may look daunting when you see the finished result, but the more you  break it down, the simpler it becomes.

3: The last problem as I see it is advertizing. Let's face it: The majority of the "regulars" on this forum are busy people with limited time for these projects. If you don't browse the forums regularly and thoroughly you can easily miss the ECW threads. A seperate part of the forum might also help this prroblem.

fJust a few random thoughts really. I don't know if it is just me or others recognize some of these things. Like I said, I really like the concept of the ECW and I think it would be a great resource to the community as it grows. However some adjustments looks like a good idea. :;):

Cheers! :)

I too really like the ECW concept and had resolved to try every single one so far, but real life ™ keeps intruding, I still have ambitions to do several of them though
I have to agree with a lot of WMN's comments, thanks for lucidly stating WMN, the common bits for instance I also find a little daunting, I was going to build a Gate with absolutly no GW bits whatever (perhaps a character) just several 'found' bits of plastic, would this have been 'legal'?

Thanks for your comments guys. I will put this on pause for a little while (a week or two only) while I consider it. I agree that I would like to keep it going, and I agree that it would be a great resource...

Thanks.
