I know this is a minor thing, but have you thought about black boots for some formations? Probably too late now and they really look great as-is, but I wonder if, with your chosen basing, the black boots might make them appear to stand out more?

(Because excellence can only be nit-picked, everything else is too good for comment)

So here's the thing: at the local Zappos in our sector the Imperium approved toddler-sized brown boots are at least $1.50 cheaper than the black ones. For a just-starting-out Hearthlord, every penny counts.

(When I tried black before, it just looks kind of shadowy down there... almost like the troops are floating. When I give them a gray highlight, they start to look like the guns. But maybe I'm just not a good enough painter to pull off black boots at this scale with a brown base? I've done black boots with a green grass base for my 6mm Napoleonics and it looks good. What I could do is try to place a dark line around the boots which would set them off from the base. I'll experiment with that on a few rear ranks and see how it looks.)

Thanks! This whole fascination with Epic and NetEpic and Squats came about due to a big nostalgia kick. So most of my painting will have a retro feel to it.

Ziod & Nitpick -

Thanks for the kudos! I appreciate it. The colors that I chose for the troops mirror the original box. The Mole Mortars have been done in Vallejo Model Air metallics and Reaper HD red and yellow.
