This has been brough up before, but unfortunately the images have since disappeared.

Basically I am doing a large commission, so i am looking into various quick painting techniques.

The Army Painter quickshade seems to work well for lager scale stuff, but I am a bit unsure how badly it covers up very small stuff like Epic Infantry due to it's thickness. I would very much like to see some examples of it in use. I am particularly interested in finding out how sharply defined edges are, so they can still pick up paint from subsequent drybrushing.

Also I wonder wich type would be most suitable. Epic stuff generally looks good with high contrast, so I was thinking either "strong" or "dark". Whichever would be closest to Devlan Mud wash. Any experiences?

Alternatively I would just buy a ****load of Devlan Mud, thin it slightly and use a big jar of that for dipping, but that could prove even more expensive than the Army Painter stuff.

I never used quickshade on infantry but i have used it on vehicles. Many of my Death Korps and my Alpha Legion vehicles are shaded with dark tone.

I don't use it anymore but if applied with a brush (more control) you can get good results.

I've used it on several formations of infantry to great effect. Like Moredakka says I prefer to to apply it with a brush as you have more control over the results. I've used Strong and Dark and personally I prefer to use dark on most infantry, of course YMMV depending on color scheme. I'd watch out for light flesh on your units. I would apply it everywhere BUT there and then use a devlan mud wash with those details. One suggestion is after you are done and matt varnished to use some thinned out paint and do am extra edge highlight to really make the color and shading pop as the tone can make them look kinda shadowy and muddled. Don't go overboard, this is extreme highlights we're talking and it just makes them pop.

As a note regardless of how I paint the unit I ALWAYS now use the Strong tone for shading my bases. I really find it makes dirt really stand out (see here)

I had a similar decision recently when doing my iron warriors and ended up making a batch of "Les Washes"

I found the formula to be near bang on GW washes but a fraction of the cost so would highly recommend them.

I find dark tone (with brush) excellent but does mute/muddy the colours - ie. good for imperial, not so much for elder etc. Depends on the scheme. I also usually thin it with GW clear medium.

@Stingray: Les washes looks very interesting as it would allow me to tone it pretty much exactly like I want it. Do you have some pictures of the results? And if it is essentially the same as GW washes, I assume that there's no issues painting over it with acrylics?

I believe colour wise, the strong tone is closest to devlan mud

Somewhere on the boards in the New Citadel Paints thread I posted a comparision picture that included Devlan Mud and Army Painter Soft, Strong, and Dark tones. IIRC Devlan mud sits between Soft and Strong tones.

All my iron warriors were washed with the 'heavy body black' recipe - see pics in this thead;

Devlan mud seems to have no exact match worked out yet but 'armour wash' and 'sewer water' are fairly close (see the recipes further down the page in that les washes tutorial page).

And yeh, these washes play fine with acrylic paints (they're made from acrylic medium + water + acrylic artists inks after all).

btw - i also just came across this article talking about army painter inks - which seem to be different from the dips (despite army painter confusing things by calling them dark tone & strong tone aswell!).
