Also, the Apothecary rhino has a weird blending to it - in the photo, it looks like bleached denim from the 80s! (I'm sure that is the way I'm looking at the photo though, and not the actual paintjob.) ;D

Yes, I thought that looking at it. I'm happy to confirm it is one of those odd tricks eyes play, possibly due to the large expanse or white bordering it. I know that because they were all airbrushed blue at the same time; the white was added later by hand. The blue on the doors and quarter panels is exactly the same shade as the other vehicles. It looks much more a match in real life when you put it next to another Rhino. On it's own however it really does look oddly faded.
The white is also more of an dirty off-white, whereas in the photo is has a distinctly blue tinge to it.

Carl, what size are the bases on your vehicles? I'm always torn on the subject of vehicle bases, sometimes I think it's a great idea, other times I prefer them to go without. Can't decide even now...

The bases look like 20mm x 40mm warmaster size to me.

Yup, spot on. The bases are 20mm x 40mm. In fact my early vehicles (Steel Legion) were actually on Warmaster bases. I switched to precision cut acrylic plastic ones from Magister Militum a few years back. If I was re-ordering now, personally I'd go with 2mm laser cut MDF. For the Land Raiders and Super-Heavies I just double up on the size (not the bases) and use 40mm x 40mm ones.

The idea of adding the Apothecary Helix to the roof is actually a great one and spookily enough the idea I was leaning towards myself. I didn't mention it because I had a senior moment writing the post and forgot what it was called :-\

What is the "dirty white" that you're using (or the technique to build it up?) I'm thinking about doing something in a similar scheme to your apothecary rhino, and have been looking at different white techniques but haven't settled on anything yet.

It is Astronomicon Grey followed by a couple of very thin layers of Ceramite White. Chipping back with a few spots of Charadon Granite then a thin wash (50/50) of Devlan Mud and a Matt Medium. A few spot highlights around any chipping is then done with a fine detail brush and neat Ceramite White. You could probably omit the chipping part and just go with the Ceramite white and mud wash to be honest to get the same effect.

Really enjoying following this thread, wish i could paint to the same standard as fast as you can. I'm usually happy with my efforts but i take ages getting things finished.

Any chance of a single model stage by stage tutorial sometime?

Love the old dreadnoughts, you are making them more than justice. The picture also reminds me of my first reaction to the new-school dreadnoughts. Coffins?

As usual Carl, fantastic work. Ultra-fantastic, to continue your pun-run. You'd better 'Terminat-or' someone might get 'Angr-on' the boards regarding the puns. Then we'd all be 'Pertur-abo'-ut the whole situation. ;D

Having an old-school Chuck and Eddy makes up for it though!

There is a line in one of the newer HH books (Betrayer?) where a character regards the newer dreadnoughts as looking like coffins, so you're not alone.

I'll see what I can do. I have actually just cleared the workbench of a Dreadball team and the Epic you just saw, so it is pretty good timing as I haven't actually started on the next mob yet.

Plastic Contemptors were actually included in the batch being done, I just ran out of corks to mount them onto as ten Dreadball minis were hogging them all at the time. The two Contemptors will go into the next group as 'fast followers' now instead.

rastamann wrote:
Fantastic as usual! I really like the banner on the dread! What will you be using as transport for the Devastator's rapiers? I'd love to see some Rhino towed ones

Most likely a couple of Rhinos, as Razorbacks don't really fit for me. And yes, I'm sure I will do some kind of towed variant to finish the look off. It may be a slightly different style of Rapier to those shown as I don't want to use one of the crewed version for that.

Thanks again for all the comments guys, it does all keep the motivation going and hopefully y'all getting something interesting out of it as well.

Second Land Raider detachment is up on the blog along with a walkthrough of the painting method which was requested.

Image

The full details and descriptions can be found on the post Land Raider walkthrough

As we move into February and the project is now only a few hundred points shy of 5000, it is coming to a close. A couple more detachments to go and then I will be wrapping up my Ultramarine Winter Challenge to make way for some new projects.

Have a great week,
Carl
