Thanks guys.

Can we have some more detail on how you achieved the smoke effect on the drop pods as I am thinking of doing something similar with mine.

It is clumping (the green foam foliage you stick on tree armatures). I just dot superglue onto the flight stands and stick patches of it on to achieve the shape I want. The flame and smoke effect is just dry brushed red, orange and yellow in that order, with orage and yellow focusing on the uppermost clumps. A little grey is also drybrushed on at the end lower down where it is still black. It is actually the exact same method I use for making explosions, blast markers and smoke for vehicle wrecks. It's very versatile and quite durable.

I think the up-impression only applies to the leftmost drop pod, the effect of the flames hitting the ground and spreading on the other two really creates a landing-effect.

Yeah, I think you are bang on. In reflection the leftmost being highest was the one I wanted to do the 'splash down' effect least on but the clumping is too thick for that making it look exactly like you say. I may adjust that one in time. Or I may pretend an Ork has just pod-jacked it!

If you used foliage, have you hardened it somehow for durability?

The black primer does a pretty decent job of firming it up, but I also go over the clumping afterwards with a generous coat of watered down chaos black to get into all the little gaps and corners where any green is still showing. I do this quite generously as being foam it does soak up the paint quickly. This also helps add a lot more to its rigidity. It will never ben rock-solid, but it is more than durable enough for frequent handling. As I mentioned above I actually use this exact technique for making blast markers as well and they have lasted years.

Just how much old school epic models have you got hidden away Carl?

Enough, but not as many as you might think, it is just an old collection and I am a bit of a hoarder. Certainly not anywhere near as many as some on this forum ;-)

Will there be one more update before Christmas?

Yes, but not for Epic sorry. Not enough time between now and Monday to get the next units(s) painted as I have considerably less free time this week. There (hopefully) should be one more before the end of the year though. So within the next two weeks.

Regards
Carl

In just before the year end. Not quite finished as I would like to add a further highlight pass over the Jetbikes and Speeders, as well as a massive 'banner' push on all the Titans to date.

Image

To get me over the next stretch target, I called in some Engine support from Legio Ignatum in the form of a Warlord Corvus Siege Engine.

Image

Although at 850 points it's a bit pricey for my current points total (only just), so to play by the rules I pulled in the favour of a couple of Warhounds to be on the safe side.

Image

As usual more details on the blog, along with a brief review of the project and year overall. Oh, and as promised a group shot.

Image

I think since 17th November I have painted somewhere in the region of 3870 points in total. Although I suspect it may be more if I include the Reaver and 'other' Warlord as well. Enough for maybe a drink or two New Year's Eve. So with that, I'd like to thank everyone here for their support, encouraging words and wish everyone a truly 'Epic' Year End and an even better 2013.

I'm off to watch the Hobbit and have a well earned break.

Carl

Hi Carl,

I'm about to head over to your blog for a detailed look, but just quickly wanted to say; 'wow'.

These models are gorgeous - love to detail work on the Titans in particular.

Thanks for sharing mate!

Cheers

fantastic work Carl, I just love everything about this army, the colour scheme (even though ultras are perhaps my least favourite chapter of all) the characterful weathering, the mix of models old and new and of course the incredible paintjob!

all in such a short space of time too....

really inspiring, I'm not out drinking tonight so I'll be breaking out the imperial fists tomorrow and getting stuck in with the paintbrush!

Fabulous and fast! I love it! I must say your scout titans' colours look familiar. Legio Ignatum? If so, it's the same colour scheme I'm painting mine :D

Thanks man. Yes, the colours are Fire Wasps. I chose Ignatum because the colours contrast nicely with the blue and white of the Ultramarines. That plus they are the Legio that features on the front cover of the Adeptus Titanicus rulebook, with the Ultramarines as it happens ;)

They all look a bit haphazard and mixed currently. Something I am hoping to soften through the Legio and kill banners I will be adding this month to help tie them all together a bit better as Fire Wasps War Engines.

That is an incredibly good-looking army that you managed to put together and paint in a very short amount of time. You should be proud. I am very impressed by the camo-pattern on the Warlord's and Reaver's carapaces. I do, however, support the idea of banners to pull them more into coherency with each other. I must stress, though, that each and every one of them looks great.

Short and sweet post as it's all a bit manic tonight. Just the one new addition this week in the form of a second Tactical Detachment. Nothing exciting I'm afraid, just an Apothecary and more core troops to bulk out the centre.

Image

Flipped the Rhino palette to make it stand out as the Apothecary's transport. Left the markings on it blank for now because I can't decide whether to put the Chapter icon on the roof hatch this time, or stick with the 'Tactical Arrow' and keep with the Chapter icons on the side. Decisions, decisions...

Have a great week.
Carl

Gene helix.

Also, the Apothecary rhino has a weird blending to it - in the photo, it looks like bleached denim from the 80s! (I'm sure that is the way I'm looking at the photo though, and not the actual paintjob.) ;D

Your army looks so good - I really love the look of a well-painted Ultramarines army!

Better yet, why not stick the apothecury helix symbol on the roof? There was one from the early days of epic/40k that I haven't got to hand but a modern version of it can look like this:

The bases look like 20mm x 40mm warmaster size to me.
