Consider this section of 3.2.1

Quote:
If a formation includes both war engines and non-war engine
units then an attacker must state whether any attacks he makes
on the formation will be directed at the war engines or the
other units in the formation. Attacks directed at the war
engines can only be allocated against war engines if they hit,
while attacks directed at other units may not be allocated to the
war engines in the formation.

I've always taken that to mean that a unit must fire all its weapons at either the WE or non-WE in a formation, making the player chose.

Others think its on a per weapon basis, so a unit with 2 weapons can fire 1 as AT at the WE and 1 as AP at infantry etc.

Thoughts?

I can't see a reason you couldn't split fire between WE and non-WE just like you can split fire between AP and AT. I've always played it on a per weapon basis.

Well consider a mixed formation of WE and AV....both a vaild AT targets but you have to chose which to target.

What about weapons that cannot shoot the WE target as it is out of their arc of fire while other AV targets are in the arc of fire? does the weapon not shoot at all if the WE is deemed to be the sole target?

We've always played it as the latter.

Locally we have always played it that you must declare number of AP or AT shots before roll dice, and if AT whether any shots against WE (and obviously whether shots are at figures out in open/in cover). So effectively on a weapon by weapon basis.

Cheers

I agree with the others. Shooting dice are normally rolled on a per weapon basis, with the shooter declaring which kind of target type he is dicing for. To me, the intent is that "an attacker must state whether any (weapon) attacks he makes on the formation will be directed at the war engines or the other units in the formation".

(my emphasis added)

We always played that you designate AT/WE the same way as AP/AT weapons choose.

Agreed, I've always done it per weapon.

So you would all be ok with a Leman russ shooting it's battle cannon and an ork fortress, its lascannon at a battlewagon and it's heavy bolters at some orks? Just checking :)

Works for me. I'd also be OK with a Warhound shooting it's VMB at 2 Orks and 2 Battlewagons, but whatever. :P

And moved.
