Post subject:  Higher Strategy Rating going first: why?

Hi all,

Quick thing that's actually been bugging me for years: can anyone tell me why the player with the higher Strategy Rating has to place their units first when deploying, garrisoning or teleporting?

It makes no sense to me—they should at least deploy second, or better yet have the option of who deploys first.

Thoughts? :)

Higher SR places obectives/deploy/garrison first for balance reasons since they're very likely to get strategy and thus go first. This gives the opponent a slight handicap.

For teleporting, the higher strategy can choose to go first or defer.

They turn up first to the battlefield, it's part of being quick on the bounce :p

Hi Dave. Thanks for responding. :)

Understood, but when Strategy 5 plays Strategy 4, for example, that "very likely" becomes "somewhat likely", in which case the punishment for being a higher Strategy Rating is even more severe—and makes even less sense. :)

This is the core of it: you've already paid for your Strategy Rating in your points costs, surely; why are you then punished further by always having to deploy first?

That strikes me as a great house-rule, and one we'll probably adopt wholesale, but I can't see where the rules for Teleportation allow for that currently.

Happy to be enlightened, though, of course! :)

AFAIK Higher strategy rating has to place first when Teleporting too.

I think that was cleared up recently, higher SR chooses, see under 1.4.1:

Are those clarifications in the Compendium these days?

Unlikely, that was a relatively recent discussion and the last compendium was put together in 09. Between the compendium and that FAQ though you should have everything you need rules-wise.

With the higher strategy rating going first in objective placement and formation deployment you get the advantage of setting up the battlefield to your choosing to a certain degree.

You place the first objective which may influence you opponent, you place formations that your opponent may have to counter with his own. Forcing your opponent to react to you and not follow their plan is normally a good thing.

If you really don't like it then I'd suggest house ruling the defer mechanism for each step of deployment, but I don't think a wholesale change do the rules is warranted.
