Is it still possible to pick WE out of mixed formations? In a game tonight, the question of why I was using a Hydra Battery instead of integrating them into my Superheavy Companies. I replied I didn't want them picked out of the formaiton, and got the response that my opponent thought that this was no longer possible. Is it?

From 3.2.1
Quote:
If a formation includes both war engines and non-war engine units then an attacker must state whether any attacks he makes on the formation will be directed at the war engines or the other units in the formation. Attacks directed at the war engines can only be allocated against war engines if they hit, while attacks directed at other units may not be allocated to the war engines in the formation.

So not only can they be picked out, the firer MUST select one type or the other.

You can still hide the Hydra, because WE block LOS. A wide wedge, with the Hydra touching the back of the front War Engine, should do the trick against most shooting attacks.

That was what I thought. Thanks!

I believe there was a clarification that the "select war engine/non-war engine" target was for shooting attacks only, not for close combat/firefight attacks, that might have caused the confusion.

Well I beleive in assault everything is now doled out in one go - bar the War Engines themselves who still decide where their dice go prior to rolling.

Yup. 3.2 is Shooting. 3.3 covers Assaults. Doesn't explicitly state you can single out WE/non-WE in an Assault, and isn't clarified in the official FAQ/Errata, or the MasterFAQ.

RAW, that's how it applies, but I can see people potentially mixing that up, especially as the section I quoted refers to "the attacker" and "attacks", rather than shooting, or shots. While it could be argued that it's only mentioned in 3.2 War Engine Shooting, so are the sections on Critical Hits, Blast Markers and Titan Killer Weapons, and we most definitely incorporate all of those into Assaults, even though only 3.3.3 references Crits obliquely.

Thread title matches my question somewhat.

If a formation has AP and AT targets, say Grots in front of a Stompa, and i shoot with a Volcano Cannon (MW) at this formation.
Would i have to specify the target type (Infantry or Vehicles) or would the Volcano Cannon hit the Grots as they are the closest target?

My understanding is that if there are no WE targets, the weapons are allocated among the eligable targets (in this case any target in the formation) front to back. If it were a Supa Stompa you could pick it out.

If there are no WE's in the target formation, I think the only distinction you can make when using a volcano cannon is in or out of cover. So, if all the infantry is in cover (say touching the AV's) you can aim for the AV's by not taking the target in cover modifier. So all the ork player has to do to prevent that is leave a grot out of cover and... vaporized grot and safe (non-supa) stompa.

Yep. If you have a MW weapon that can be allocated to either infantry or vehicle, it's just straight front-to-back allocation, regardless of target. The only "targeting" options are for WEs or in/out of cover.

That's one of CP's favorite rules.
