Expanded Titan Criticals I've been thinking about making expanded critical tables for the various titans in EA (all races including experimental), with the aim that these will be a reasonably balanced alternative to the current crits. Looking at tables from current, previous and alternative Epic rulesets there seem to be several main classes of results that can be drawn from in making entertaining criticals, can anyone think of more? STAGGERED Titan randomly moves a certain distance, rolling to hit infantry/vehicles it passes over, stopping if it hits a war engine or impassable terrain. CRIPPLED Movement impaired in some way, from imobilised to just a movement penalty. Possibly repairable. WEAPONS OFFLINE One or more weapons reduced in efficacy in some way. Possibly repairable. FIELDS DOWN Void, power or holofields offline. Possibly repairable. FIRE (Ork Characteristic result) - ongoing damage and potential to spread if not put out. REACTOR DAMAGE (Imperial Characteristic result), big explosion if not repaired. Potential for ongoing damage in some systems. CRASH (Destroyed) Titan topples in ruin, rolling to hit units in base contact. EXPLOSION (Destroyed) Titan explodes in some fashion, rolling to hit units within certain random distance. |

In AT it was possible to damage the Mind Impulse Unit, making the crew/Titan interface sporadic. |

And how were you intending to implement the table? IMHO, "Staggered" should be removed as it does nothing. If you then merged the "Fire" and "Reactor damage", you could get the following table for a D6:- 1 - CRIPPLED Movement reduced to 0cm by major damage to the legs, tracks or drive mechanics. Possibly repairable depending on titan 2 - WEAPONS OFFLINE Half the weapons (rounded up) are offline. Possibly repairable depending on titan 3 - SHIELDS DOWN Void, power or holofields offline. Possibly repairable depending on titan 4 - MAJOR DAMAGE Fire has broken out in the WE causing an additional 1DC damage immediately. In the End-Phase check for further effects with a D6:-
6 - (Orks:- additional fire), (Others:- Explosion/destroyed). Note, instead of 'fire' Tyranids suffer a 'major wound' but their regenerative powers may heal it 5 - CRASH (destroyed) Titan topples or is blown over, and is completely destroyed affecting all units in 5cm radius. Each unit must make an armour save. 6 - Explosion (Destroyed) Titan suffers catastrophic explosion, and is completely destroyed affecting all units in 10cm radius. Each unit must make an armour save. One question though, should we allow things to be repaired in the timeframe of the game, or note that these are really only repairable for campaign purposes? |

Currently anything that is damaged/destroyed in game (I can think of Holofields and the Dominatrix Symbiote) are not repairable. I certainly think that there are options for expanded damage options (Warhound stagger is particularly annoying) but there would be certain balance questions. Look at the current Tyranid WE damage tables. Smaller WE's are killed outright but larger ones can take additional damage (between 1 and D3+1 DC) along with wild thrashing (Harms models in contact with the Bio-Titan). All on a D6 roll. The damage tables are built into the list. Introducing a roll with reduced damaging options would certainly make some titans (like Imperial) better. You may need to have a points handicap applied to specific titans when using expanded damage tables. Reduced/No movement and weapon damage are certainly preferable to reactor damage on Warlord/Reaver Titans but any addiontal damage option would hurt the Warhound. |

Thanks for all the feedback. To explain myself better, I was aiming to build individual critical tables for different titans, based on 2D6 rolls and a range of results made up of the above categories (plus a few more minor ones like "shaken - extra blast marker" to balance out the more horrific varieties...). This also enables balancing critical tables so that larger titans are more resilent than the little ones, and general balancing against the current Titan points and criticals. Maybe with a few tweaks, eg current Warhound titan crit is pretty naf compared to that of other equivalent titans, and Warhounds are an extremely popular choice anyway so a greater range of critical results wouldn't hurt. I've been drawing on the Epic40k critical tables for inspiration in particular (which by the way arkturas, is where I introduced the current EA bio-titan criticals from a couple of years ago!! ![]() |
