As the title says. Linking into the debate on the size of wraithgates why not have a max size for objectives and a  common system for establishing what you measure to. I would propose:

Blitz objectives. Nominate a point on your table edge, this the objective, place a marker in front of it so you don't forget where it is!

All other objectives. Maximum size titan base, measure from centre of objective to holding units.

I recall talking to Neal's play group about this and they basically suggested that the 60mm diameter titan base (as you stated) would be the largest reasonable size, but they pointed out that the objectives they sell are closer to 25mm x 25mm.

From my perspective, based on trying to make my own, I'd say that the 60mm titan bases make it easier for people to scratch build their own. The size of the GW objectives is really too small to easily match with scratch built ones.

We always measure from the centre of the objective, so it doesn't matter what size it is.

I stick my objectives on the 60mm base, with a measuring point added for clarity. I would go with the 60mm base as the 'standard' size, based on the fact that smaller ones could be fixed on top easier than larger ones can be shrunk.

Would that be a huge rule change to make objectives terrain? Basically some generic "ruins" terrain, size should be 40-60mm across (but measure to middle)..

It is a bid sad that pople have all those beautiful terrain pieces with stuff on them and gamewise they are completely ignored - I would give cover to infantry to stand on one..

The tournament scenario is meant to be balanced for both players... making objectives into terrain pieces breaks this balance as players will have different sized objectives.

Don't think you need a minimum size. It is after all a 'point'. Hell i pin stuck int he table could be good enough.

I think rather than a hard and fast rule, some general direction (maybe design notes) should be sufficient.  Something like:

Objectives should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 40x40mm but anything reasonably close to that is acceptable.  A 60mm round should probably be considered the largest acceptable objective.  You'll have to agree with your opponents during the 5-minute warm-up whether objectives will be measured to the edge of the objective or to a defined point (marked on the objective or simply the center).

in the section that covers objectives.

I thought it was pretty much a universally accepted convention that you measure to a discrete point?

If so, why not enshrine that in the rules?

Actually, we've pretty much codified 40mm bases as the standard objective size around here, and we measure from anywhere on the base, as it could represent a patch of ground, a hilltop, a supply depot, or any other kind of small installation.

It's kind of like how one doesn't measure from the "centre" of a model to determine range and such...

So you measure from the board edge for the Blitz, but to the objective's base on other objectives?

We use the edge of the objective around here, too.*  I don't think it makes much tactical difference.

I understand the theoretical argument that a larger objective area might be slightly against larger formations and horde armies, as it would be more difficult to block off the "scoring" radius entirely, but has anyone actually seen it affect play?

*Edit: to the objective model, not the base, just like for any other based model.

My Necron Tomb Complex is pretty big and that could mess people up because it is my blitz objective but the troops come out of the portal which is technically on the edge of the table but visibly about 6cm up.  But it is one of those things we just cover in the 5-min warmup.  For the big objectives we just do it to the center or set up an arbitrary point on the objective prior to placement.  It's never been a big deal.
