Rather than this long list of allowable units most transport vehicles have, why not instead have transport 1 and 2?
A units type (infantry, light vehicle etc) would change to type x, for instance terminators would be Infantry 2.

So a thunderhawk becomes transport (8) and you just add up the value of the units you wish to transport.

As transport allocations are determined by army list mostly there would only be a few oddities and it would need far less notes, as well as not creating problems for, say, varient marines. Stuff like Rhinos would have specifically two type 1 stands.

2 Land Speeders in a Rhino?

No, because they would be 'TYPE : LIGHT VEHICLE', rather than 'TYPE : LIGHT VEHICLE (1)'.

I like this idea.

How would you differ that things like Vampires can transport Warp Spiders but Wave Serpents cannot?

You'd set that through the army list.

Umm - The idea seems to work alright in principle for the vast majority of troops and troop types. So you would get
? ? Marines - Inf (type 1)
? ? Speeders - LV
? ? Dreadnought - AV (type 2)
?? ?Rhinos AV, Transport (2x type 1)
?? ?THawk - Transport (8x type 1)
? ? ?Landing Craft WE, Transport (12x Type 1, 6x type 2) etc.

But I also think there would actually be quite a large number of anomalies. For example,
? ? Landing craft count dreadnoughts in their infantry slots, and may take 4x Landraiders - neither of which are easily described as "Type 1" or "Type 2".
? ? Drop pods likewise can take Dreadnoughts but not other vehicles, and also may not take bikes or Assault troops, or scouts
? ? THawks and Landing Craft can take assault troops and bikes.
? ? Rhinos and Land Raiders can take 2x type 1 infantry, but not Terminators, bikes or assault troops.
? ? Space Cruisers have slots for 20x infantry and 20 vehicles, but count terminators and dreadnoughts as single infantry, and Rhinos and Land Raiders as single AVs etc.

So, I do not see it actually simplifying things much, and when you also consider the re-writing effort involved compared with the limited gains, I have to ask whether this would be worth the hassle??

Hmmmm....

Tactical Marine Unit - Type: Infantry (size 1)
Dreadnought - Type: Armoured Vehicle (size 2)

Rhino - Transport (2x size 1, Infantry Only)
Land Raider - Transport (1x size 2, Infantry Only)
   Thunderhawk - Transport (4x size 2)

Things that can carry 'size 2's' would already be able to carry size 1's.

So a Land Raider for example:
- Could carry 1 base of Terminators, or:
- Could carry 2 bases of Tactical Marines.

It couldn't carry Dreadnoughts because of the note 'infantry only'.

A Thunderhawk could carry Dreadnoughts, because it'd lack the 'infantry only' note.

So it would seem that I can now carry Assault troops and Bikes in both Rhinos and Land Raiders . . . . .

Space Marines:

(normal infantry stand): 1 infantry slot
assault stand: 1 slot
bike: 1 slot
terminator stand: 2 infantry slots
dreadnought: 2 slots

Rhino: transport 2 (1 slot infantry only)
Land Raider: transport 2 (infantry only)
Thunderhawk: transport 8
Landing craft: transport 12 plus 4 land raiders or 6 rhino cassis based

..no need to be able to change all things to numbers...

Eldar:
Guardians, most aspects, etc. 1 slot infantry
Swooping Hawks, Warp Spiders, Rangers, Heavy wpn, Support wpn,.. 1 slot
Wraithguard: 1.3 slots infantry (round up)   (a bit tricky)

Falcon: transport 1 (infantry only)
Wave Serpent: transport 2 (infantry only)
Vampire Raider: transport 8

Orks would then be a bit more trickier but as doable as others.

Technically, yes, but the army list wouldn't allow it.

Not needed. The room saved for the Transport ability would be just wasted for the exceptions that this system would make. The current one is very clear, at least.

I agree with Magarch Im afraid- the current system works fine.  There is little advantage to  holding exceptions at army list level over putting them on the datafaxes.  If you want to change the transport of an xisting unit, simply make a design note and include a modified datafax in the new army list.  Much simpler.

After reading this all: Doesn't you find it a bit silly to write loads of specialexceptions what a vehicle can't transport than the current system? :D

I agree with Magarch on this,it seems a lot of work to end up where we are now.
