The Deathwind attacks are made from the DroppPod marker. Nowhere is stated that the attacks ignore intervening terrain.
The DropPod marker is ground zero for the Deathwind attacks, LOS and placing of the first model of the dropped formation.

Personally i would change Drop Pods to this here:

Space Marine Drop Pod
Type/Speed/ Armour/ Close Combat/ Firefight
Armoured Vehicle/ Fighter/ (5+/6+)/ -/ -

Weapon/ Range/ Firepower/ Notes
-/ -/ - / -
Notes: Planetfall, Transport(may carry one of the following units: Space Marine Tactical, Devastator, Scout or Dreadnought unit). The Dop Pod has an Armour Value of 5+ if flying and 6+ once landed. Once landed it can't disengage.

Space Marine Deathwind Drop Pod
Type/ Speed/ Armour/ Close Combat/ Firefight
Armoured Vehicle/ Fighter/ (5+/6+)/ -/ -

Weapon/ Range/ Firepower/ Notes
3 x Deathwind System/ 15cm/ AP5+/AP5+/ One-shot
Notes: Planetfall, The Dop Pod has an Armour Value of 5+ if flying and 6+ once landed. Once landed it can't disengage and opens fire at the nearest formation in range regardless of friend or fow and uses up all its shots.

"Strike Eagle" Drop Pod Detachment**
4+ Drop Pods free
0+ Dreadnought Drop Pods free
0-4 Deathwind Drop Pods* +25points
*Place and fire with the Deathwind Drop Pods before you place any other Drop Pods.
**Once landed the formation can't activate nor take or contest objectives.

It might be a small detail but not pointless. A dedicated Drop Pod formation is so much more characterful than just a marker and would give a reson to leave the lovely painted Drop Pods models on the table.

Jervis Sorted this out a few years ago,
If in doubt, apply the rule *strictly* as written. In this case the rule is:

"After the drop pod lands, its Deathwind attacks all enemy units within 15cms."

So, any *enemy* unit within 15cms of the drop pod is attacked. This is a special rule and therefore overides the normal game rules for LOS. However, the rule does not say that cover saves don't apply, so they should be used.

I do remember talk about removing the datafax for the Drop Pod as it causes confusion (would this qualify :D). However I don't remember such a thing in the Change Docs. What happened to that Neal? Was removed as there was not larger change to how orbital drops was to be changed (from aircraft rules v2 that you posted)?

Hmm that's a good point, Neal recommended that I just delete the datafax info like AV and stuff that has no game effect as it confuses people (and I did so).  Was that in the change documents though? Can't find it.

Well, that's answered then!  *laugh*

Perhaps add "regardless of LOS" to it?

It was a casualty of one of many revisions and false starts.

I dropped any plan of a comprehensive air rules re-write because of the (at the time) promised timeline.  The plans was for "minimalist" air rules changes, so I left it as it was.

I do still think it needs to be done.

And... dptdexys for the win!  Thanks for the link.

Solving rules disputes in Epic is starting to become not entirely dissimilar to cyber-archeology. :D

As it stands right now, the Drop Pod is listed as n/a for unit type.  I think that's clear enough that it is not a  unit.  On the LoS issue, a small note in the Drop Pod text would be fine I think.

But shouldn't the type be armoured vehicle? What I mean here is that if the planetfall unit is to drop to terrain which is dangerous or impassable, it will derive - should drop pods derive or can they land to buildings?
