My grandfather's platoon was completely destroyed (except for him) at Bloody Colmar.

Thanks for posting that, it made for an interesting read!  Since moving to France I've found myself more interested in finding out about the Liberation of the country during World War 2, and about the French Resistance movement (where we live was part of an area where there was so much Resistance activity, apparently the Germans never fully had it under their control).

Reading that article helps reinforce what a slog the Liberation must have been; in the UK we tend to mark D-Day, but that way it's easy to forget the efforts that came after.  One can only imagine what your Grandfather and his fellow soldiers went through at Colmar.

Early, up to the Liberation of France.  I'm not sure what the political leanings of many of the resistance fighters round here - after the war it was mainly Socialist fighters, or something along those lines, am I right?  Just a vague impression I've got from the few things I've read...
