So. Epic is supposed to be 6mm scale right?

Well i did some numbercrunching and came up with this:

Index Astartes III gives us the dimensions of the Land Raider. Its 10,36m long and 6,10m wide.
Then i took the SG Land Raider and it is roughly 3,6cm long and roughly 2,1cm wide.

This translates exactly to scale 1/285.

So 1mm would be 28,5cm in real live.
6mm would be 1,71m in real live.

Hmmm.. a bit small for a Space Marine, isn't it?

So look at the Chaos Space Marines which all say "Woa scale creep! They are FAT!" CSMs are roughly 8mm tall.
That would be 2,28m in real live. Now THATS looks more than a Space Marine :)

Interestingly the MK7 Epic Space Marines (E40k era) are only 7mm tall. :D

I think figure scale is often quoted as ground to the figure's eyes (assuming they are human :alien:).  However, different manufacturers define them differently.

Wikipedia to the rescue:

Scale is generally expressed as the approximate height of a humanoid figure from base of foot to eyeline (though some count to top of head - hence the possible confusion) in millimeters, this is sometimes referred to as the Barret Scale, as opposed to the ratio values used in scale modeling. Popular sizes include 54 mm, 45 mm, 28 mm, 25 mm, 20 mm, 15 mm, 10 mm and 6 mm. These roughly equate to ratios of 1:32, 1:35, 1:64, 1:72, 1:76, 1:100, 1:200 and 1:300, respectively.

Which would explain why Chaos SM are taller than their loyalist "buddies" if you go to the top of the model. Chaos SM are usually festooned with spikes & horns which would add to the model's height without changing scale.

Cheers
