I found this interesting, not good or bad, just interesting. ![]() As I am doing my recount of the Imperial Stuff, I realized I tended to go for the Iron Fist tactic with my Guard. Lots of Tanks, Super Heavies, Mech Infantry, and such. Small numbers of the RR, snipers, and other lighter style formations. But when it came to my 15mm stuff, it was like a 180 degree flip. Mostly light Infantry, droppable troops and equipment, and overall lighter style formations. Very little in the way of ?Heavy? armor (well not counting my OGRE). It was like as I moved worked on the two collections, I was following two very different tactical ways of thought. So it made me wonder when you all build an army, do you just collect or do you formulate a basic tactic and buy to that? dafrca |

I start with basic core elements on how I think I will employ it on the table Once that has "seen the elephant" and I devsie refinements to my strategy (or even devise a whole new one) I collect to that purpose. As my familiarity grows and I see employment of more diverse units, I tend to expand there - organising into heavy and light units like L4 Of course, that is my aim - trades, shop sales and Ebay windfalls not withstanding! ![]() |

Since epic is the only scale for which I buy minis, my answer is probably skewed. When I started buying for AT/SM1, I bought some core things, like the Eldar warhost and Ork horde boxed sets. After that I bought what was available at my hobby store. I knew I wanted to collect at least one of just about everything. So, the oreder of purchases didn't matter. After having played many games, I realized I needed to adjust some of my tactics, leading to my buying more of a particular mini, e.g. my army IG needs more hydras. So, I guess for me it's collecting first, formulate tactics second. |

WARGAMING: Collecting Armies? Hi Dafrca, Dafrca: I found this interesting, not good or bad, just interesting. I agree with this completely, except that I tend to do it the other way around. I get hooked by a random inspiration, and then see which game it fits into best. For some, bizarre reason, I have been looking at the Tau in 40K (I really like the Fire Warriors minis, and the idea of the armies strengths and weaknesses appeals to me). I dont want a large force, and so I am looking at the 40K Combat Patrol rules (shudder!), or adapting my 'home grown' Advanced Space Crusade rules to include them. This has lead me to the thought of a Tau insertion force, with loads of tanks, and Epic is perfect for this. I would not try to force a tank based force into a 40K game (personally, I think that most tanks should be banned from that scale anyway). |

Hi! Its been quite a while since I bought into another scale. I was somewhat tempted by 10mm scale for warmaster, but balked at the cost. I dont really like skirmish games, so most 28mm games go unnoticed or dont spark my interest. Primarch |

Yes ... I try to stay with G/W Epic models and meld collecting and organizing TO&Es. And still can (or try) to kick butt on the board ! ![]() ![]() |

I, too, have been tempted by Warmaster. If I ever do get into it, I would only build a Dwarf army. |

Hi CS, I can't beleive you're thinking about 28mm 40k! With the latest GW price hike, it's too expensive. E-A is bad enough. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. |

Amen ! Not mention the 40k rules are lame and many of the players are "kids into bright shiny things" ! ![]() ![]() |

How true. However, I already own the 40K rule book, and a fair few minis. I really like the Tau minis, and it makes a bit of a change. My aim is to produce a number of Combat Patrol forces (400 points only) that I can then just use as pick up and play. For the Tau, my 400 points are spent in a single box of Fire Warriors and three XV Battlesuits. That being said, it will always take a back seat to Epic and Gothic, and that puts it as a seriously future prospect! |
