EA, BFG, AI, 40K cross game campaign tournament. GENERAL IDEA I am planning on running a tournament early in 2008 that combines multiple gaming systems and different game sizes in a team campaign style event. The aim of which is to create a series of really fun and interesting games that should allow individual generals to play roughly balanced games but to feel like they are part of a greater story where the outcome of games impact on future games. What I am really hoping to achieve out of this is to showcase a wide range of aspects of the wargaming hobby and to increase exposure of the 40K players to the specialist games. I am hopping to draw upon a range of different peoples ideas and skills to create something really cool and I am hopping that if a good tournament pack can be made up it will allow other people to run a similar sort of tournament as well (my ultimate ideal here is for several people to run similar tournaments over the same weekend around the world and build all the fluff, pictures and tournament reports together on the web). OVERVIEW OF FORMAT IDEAS The format I am hopping on running is to have three 2 to 2:30 games each day for two days with the potential to run longer games for those players that are interested over the two afternoon sessions. To avoid over complication of the campaign system and stop it from becoming two complicated I am aiming at having all the players assigned to either one of two teams which I will call Chaos and Imperial for now to make things easier. At the start of each round there will be a briefing session giving the team a rundown of the fluff, where the campaign is at and what there overall goals are for this round. It will include a choice in each round which will effect the objectives that there team will have to achieve in there individual games. Each of the tables will represent a named location that will be discussed in the briefings and included on maps. IDEAS FOR INTERESTING GAMES THAT FEEL LIKE PART OF CAMPAIGN I am hoping to create a series of scenarios that are a little different and feel like they are influencing each other without becoming to complicated, or ending up favouring one side too much so that they get an easy win after victory in the first round. I have had all sorts of ideas for scenarios so far but I will just use one example to demonstrate the sort of format and ideas for how I want things to run. In the first round a game of AI will involve some forces from the Chaos side trying to bomb an imperial communications really station. And for this example lets say it was a success. In the briefings for next round the Imperial players are told that their communication channels have been damaged and information is only coming through with great difficulty. They will be played an MP3 recording of a scout reporting that chaos forces are moving into an area near the bridge over a certain area that cuts into static before any more information is revealed. Going into the start of the next round one of the Imperial players is playing a game of Epic on the table including the bridge. The players are given an overview sheet detailing the scenario they are playing as well as an envelope each that contains there objectives for the scenario. They are instructed not to open the envelopes or reveal there contents to their opponents until instructed to by the scenario overview sheet. On the scenario overview sheet the Chaos player is instructed to open their envelope before employment so that they know there objectives and not to tell the imperial player until after turn three when players start looking at victory conditions.. The imperial players instructions have two different options for when to open there objectives envelope one states they can open it straight away and look at the chaos players objectives (as the full scout report got through) this option is crossed out and they are instructed to capture the bridge and open their envelope to reveal secondary objectives after the first round as intelligence is not coming through due to the destroyed relay station. For each table a map will be provided with named locations so in scenarios like this important places will be show so players can have an educated guess at what there opponent?s objectives are. I am hoping that a scenario like this would capture the feel of a campaign without making the game too difficult for the imperial player after all they still have two rounds to achieve there objectives. THE BUILD UP I am planning on building this up slowly on local forums with fluff, maps, imagery and possibly some preliminary battle reports set prior to the campaign happening. OTHER THOUGHTS AND IDEAS. Terrain: I really want to make some nice terrain for this and do some interesting things with the tables. For instance the table that is discussed in the above scenario I would like to make a replacement piece of terrain for the bridge (as one of the objectives of the chaos player will be to destroy the bridge) so that it can be changed for future games if the player succeeds. HELP? This is a pretty big project and I would really love other people?s thoughts and input on all aspects of the idea. Would love ideas for: scenarios storyline aspects names for places and the campaign itself ideas for incorporation of BFG scenarios ideas for special scenarios for the larger two round games fluff text for briefings and to start building up the campaign idea on local forums ideas for scripts for the briefings volunteers to be the voices in recorded messages played in the briefings (so they don?t all sound like me) Also anyone keen on playtesting any scenarios would be much appreciated. I am planning on getting the whole pack together so it is nicely presented and making everything available so other people can run similar campaigns (although the final scenario ideas I don?t want to make public until after the event so there are some surprises for any players that see this thread (but can be sent to anyone who is interested in running something along this format). |

I'm not much one for writing scenarios and such unfortunately. My mate wrote a campaign that you might be able to get some ideas from though: The Waaagh of Nagkhul Grukk http://www.jovianstorm.co.nz/wg/writing/ |

I played a similar thing with some friends... a 15,000 point BFG game: Imperial FOrces assault the eye of terror possibile outcomes: IN Victory: Landing on Chaos Planet CHaos Victory: IN falls back to large space station IN won so we deployed IG Epic scale (friends models) the way we deployed: you got x2 amnount of points for each survivng ship if u were IN, the Chaos got 20k then play out the EPic game.... IN Victory: 40k battle to kill Abbadon in his fortress CHaos Victory: IG retreat to teleporters to retunr to their ships while chaos hunts them down... either way models used in EPic become 40k...(1 stand of 5 IG men becomes 1 IG trooper...) and we played this on a sleep over lomngnweekend took about 20hrs to play the whole thing... we had teams of 3....six of us... and we had (only for BFG) an Ork player interfere as a passing convoy and attack anything that moves... if you want i can dig out the fluff we wrote..(about 10pages) |

Sounds cool! I am interested in looking at any ideas to try and put this together as best I can. Will be working on much smaller game sizes to make it run as a three games a day tournament but I can adapt any ideas. |

so this si the absic stuff; The IN must destroy the 13th Warpgate before the chaos can get Abbadon through it..a loss will mean that the IN must fall back and prepare to brace for what abbadon will bring back through with him. BFG GAME Left side of board: Planet Killer + 5 Cruisers Bottom of board: IN PLANET + 10,000 or 15,000 point fleet Right ; Chaos Planet; 8,000 poin fleet Top 2,000 ork interference 2 =][= can be placed anywhere CHAOS WIN IF THE PLANET KILLER REACHES THE Chao PLANET AND HALF THE FLEET HAS SURVIVED (POINTS WISE) IN WIN IF PLANET KILLER IS DESTROYED OR IF MORE THAN HALF OF FLEET IS DESTORYED DRAW IF Planet killer reaches planet but more than half of chaos fleet is destroyed IF CHAOS WIN EPIC 40k battle on a IG planet....IG 5,000 points per survivng BFG ship - CHAOS - 40,000 + 3k for each large cruiser remaining IF IG WIN EPIC on CHaos planet: destroy the warpgate (make up own points method/victory) obvious warpgate must be desroyed for IG victory IF DRAW Epic on Chaos...IG prepare outside of warpgate ready to receive the Chaos Return.... Chaos 100,000 points - IG 80,000points + 5,000more only for artillery THEN you can do 40k battles the same but smaller scale... EPIC 40k |
