To go along with the 'most anticipated movies' thread, I thought it'd be cool to have a thread to share our favourite movies of 2006.

So, what was your favourite?

It's a sad situation when one is forced tosay - I can't remember! We've seen very few, including some good ones, but I just can't remember a single one, unless:

Ice Age - the Meltdown!

Ice Age II wasn't bad at all.  Cars was funny as well (you can tell who has kids in the house).

Pirates of the Carribean II was my favorite. Hilarious, great special effects, epic in proportions, and fantastic music (which is always a big seller for me).

Well, due to my local cinema's pathetic film selection policy I missed two films which have had high critical acclaim and I'd have loved to see: Little Miss Sunshine & Pan's Labyrinth.

This year the film's (which I've been able to see!!!) I've enjoyed most are V for Vendetta, Walk the Line, Casino Royale, and The Prestige.

But my Favourite has to be Children of Men: superbly directed by Alfonso Cuaron, it managed to mix some of my favourite elements in sci-fi/horror films - an apocalyptic feel with some neat political subtext.

I believe it's just been released in the US, see it if you get the chance!

Firestorm,

Is Children of Men the movie set in the future where women can't give birth?  If so, I really want to see that.  Unfortunately Santa didn't bring babysitters for Christmas.  :glare:

Sigh - I missed all of the films you've mentioned, except for Children of Men and Pan's labyrinth, which havn't turned up yet,and Casino Royale, which was good fun too.

Btw, I notice that you didn't post yours :D.

My favourite was also Children of Men.

Rarely have I seen dystopic sci-fi done so immersively... of special note is the camerawork, where the action scenes especially are often done in enourmously long uninterupted shots in a verite, unflinching style.

All in all a great human drama that will be amongst my favourite movies for most likely the rest of my life.

I did only just watch it for the first time a few days ago so excuse me for gushing, but this is one of the rare ones.

I also liked Casino Royale (A pleasant surprise) and am hoping to catch Pan's Labyrinth too as I hear that's also very good.

EDIT: 'Crank' deserves special mention too, very fun.

Was the new War of the Worlds this year or last?

Anyway, I've only been home less than 6 months in 15 months so I'm counting that as my favourtie move in my last year at home! :-)

Final Fantasy VII

Can't say much about the plot as after five or so times through I still don't "get it"... although if you've played the games I'm told it makes a lot more sense... but the animation is absolutely mind blowing.

Children of Men is tops on my "can't believe I missed it" list though. :D

I have Final Fantasy VII on dvd - incredible animation, havent a clue about the plot either.

I managed to miss Children of Men and Pans Labrynth... but will keep an eye out for the dvds.

I think my favourite (until someone mentions one that I had forgotten) is actually Over The Hedge. One of my two favourite cartoon films of all time - the other being The Emperors New Groove.

I hate to admit it, but I don't think I saw a single new movie this year.  :(

Children of Men was a good book - looking forward to seeing it.

Best film of this last year?

"Nightwatch" was perhaps my favourite, but "Sympathy for Lady Vengance" was also superb. "V for Vendetta" was also (much to my surprise) very good.

Tas, you're not suggesting that "War of the Worlds" should be a "best" movie?
