So I am trying to decide what exactly I need to get to build a good fair and balanced Ork army for intro games (other than training games). I already have alot of things for a Guard army.
I do have all the Marines (or most of them) I need for the majority of the Training missions, but after someone has played those they will want to get in a real game.
So a few questions.
What size game should be played as the first real game - post Training missions? 2000 pts? 3000 pts?
I am going to work out a few Ork List at 2k, 2.5k, 3k and post them to see if they are decent list.
Also are there any other really good starter list? I do not think Space Marines are a good starter, because they are not as straight forward as Orks and Imperial Guard can be.

This kind of post makes me wonder if it is possible to put up a scenario and starter lists (best game for minimum initial funding costs) for people that want to get in a little to try it all out...?

I reckon that s agood idea CS. It may be worth thinking of a price cap for small games- say playable with 2 infantry boxes and 2 blisters so that the total cost is ~?40 (ebay non withstanding...)
So for Orcs that would give a force of:
8 nobz 48 boyz 16 gretchin 8 stormboyz 8 kommandoz
Reinforcements: KOS (1x buggies, 1x bikes) Tankz (2x Gunwagons) STOMPAZ (1x stompaz blister)
For IG you could go for a similar pattern: 48 Troopers 8 officers 8 ogryn
Reinforcements: Tank Co (1X LR blister) Arty co (1X artillery company) Fast attack (1X rough riders, 1x vulture)
So the question could be what balanced forces would you come up with with that and how much would the points be. Also for beginners basing guidance might be good- ie you always need more nobs/gretchin than you get in the box...

You might try searching the SG boards. This is a regularly asked question and you'll likely see several posts.
The training scenarios in the book are good, especially if you have only moderately experienced gamers. You can crank through them quickly and they introduce the rules in a methodical pattern that seems easy for people to grasp.
For experienced gamers you can probably jump straight in to a ~2000 point game. Same for beginners that have done the training scenarios.
Keep out the WEs and aircraft for the first real game and slowly ramp up the points. I suggest adding WEs in as the next step (kept to moderate levels at first) then aircraft.
For a starter Ork force, without reference to cost, I would recommend a footslogger infantry formation (Big, probably) and a mounted infantry formation as the core. That will teach most of the tools of an Ork force and give a good sense for the potential directions in which to take the army. Other formations can be pretty much anything but I would tend away from Stompas for a beginner and towards more horde-ish stuff like the KoS. The Stompas can be very good but they are expensive and can be surprisingly fragile if used improperly. Hordes are much more forgiving.

Excellent point CS.
Main reason I posted is that I started off playing EA using Marines against a friend who played Orks (the basic Epic 40,000 as a starter).
I totally agree that the best start point is the training scenarios, but those are Marine centric and not everyone wants to get a core Marine army to learn on. Also once I get through those I want to be able to hand the new player a force of Orks or Guard (which I am working on for myself anyway) or possibly something else.
I assume Eldar are very fragile to learn on and probably not the best army to play your first few games on. How are Tau in terms of forgiveness?
